Authoring Tools Not Working

Page 1 of 4Next

For some reason, my Portal 2 authoring tools have literally stopped working even though it worked fine the day earlier. I go onto Steam and double-click on "Portal 2 Authoring Tools - Beta" under Tools and instead of the usual menu you get (with the face viewer, map editor, etc), I get an empty box which crashes when I try anything with it. After reinstalling the authoring tools, I get literally nothing when I try to open it. It's simply gone from working to not working in a day's time.

Naturally, I tried doing a google search for this but I have recieved exactly zero results that relate to my problem. So, any ideas? Thanks in advance.

If everybody have this problem (including me...), Valve will quickly do something to fix it.
I guess.
I pray.
For now, all we have to do is to beat our personal best times in Challenge Mode or think to 'how should I ameliorate my custom maps ?'.

I got the same problem too. It stopped working after the last update that came with the new dlc. Hoping for a quick fix.

great, now even portal 2 has stopped working :notwant:

Any idea what's causing it? I mean I know that Hammer and all its relating tools were laughably unstable but this is redicilous. I mean what programme just stops working one day you try it?

It's a pity because I was in the middle of making a co-op map.

EDIT: Coming to think of it, it probably was the most recent update that Steam does automatically. Funny, Steam has been doing HEAPS of updates for Portal 2. So hopefully Valve will fix whatever error they made in their previous update in a new one. Until then, if anyone knows of a fix, saying so will REALY be appreciated.

Same here, so i would hope valve fixes it quickly.
In the meantime, back to pen&paper sketching :)

Hi,

Well, after some poking around, I find that just before hammer.exe exits it starts looking for a dll p4lib.dll, and if I googled for that dll, I found a post about it from 2008

From there, I found you can try to run apps that have problems with p4lib.dll with the -nop4 flag.

So, until they fix it properly, this works, and run it direct from the windows start menu

C:Program Files (x86)SteamSteamAppscommonportal 2binhammer.exe -nop4

Thats for win7, for other versions, do a search for hammer.exe (make sure its the portal one and not HL2 or some other version though)

Rob.

"hammer.exe - Entry Point Not Found

The procedure entry point ETWMouseDown could not be located in the dynamic link library tier0.dll."

Am I the only one who doesn't know what the hell this is on about?

Hmmm, I dont get that... did you try starting it like I said? Or is that from starting it through steam?

Indeed with that method you can run hammer but it will crash when using some features (probably the ones that were updated with the DLC), like the model browser.

I had the same issue (although I don't know why), I believe if you used the "Verify integrity of game cache..." for Portal 2 (Not the Authoring Tools, or both to make it sure) it would fix the issue. (Right click at Portal 2 on the list, Local files, Verify .... )

Yeah, looks like the model browser is trashed... I cant figure out that one :(
