[Coop] Bridge Building

Page 1 of 2Next

'Bridge Building' created by DrFauli
- 3 large rooms; difficulty increases with each room
- design based on chapter 3 of the coop-campaign

[Question & Answer Section]:

Q: Does the solution to one of the puzzles include 'fast reflexes', dying or ninja skills?
A: No! You don't need ninja skills and you won't need fast reflexes either.
It is also possible to solve the map without dying, but you might die by accident. :)
(Just blame it on your partner then...)

Q: Where did you get the idea for the design?
A: All visuals and details are based on chapter 3 of the coop-campaign.
I like the puzzles and the design of chapter 3 very much and
decided to give it a try. Let me know how you like it!

Q: How was this map build?
A: This map was created with 'Valve Hammer Editor' (Portal 2 Authoring Tools Beta).

Q: How many hours did you work on this map?
A: I have spent about... 152 hours:
- 97 hours building the map
- 21 hours working on little details and applying my creativity :)
- 12 hours planning the map and the puzzles
- 11 hours testing the puzzles and looking for bugs/exploits
- 6 hours optimizations on design, lighting, visleafs and gameplay
- 5 hours talking to playtesters and receiving feedback (thanks guys!)

Q: We want to give feedback on the map - how do we do that?
A: I am always looking forward to receive feedback on my maps!
-> You can just leave a comment here and I will get a notfication.
-> Just let me know what you think of the map and how you like it.
-> I would also appreciate if you share the map with your friends. :)

[Thank You Section]:

Thanks for playtesting my map and giving feedback:
- Lpfreaky90
- LuckyRJ
- BlumCoLe
- sicklebrick
- BenVlodgi
- SnickerS

Another big 'thank you' to Lpfreaky90 and LuckyRJ for recording
their playtests with voicechat and giving me feedback on so many
things. Your help is much appreciated guys!
I have learned a lot about mapping and polishing the map, from you.

Thanks to all the players who take the time to write a comment.
Any feedback is much appreciated and I am looking forward to see
what people think about the map-design and puzzles. :)

I'm really surprised everyone has neglected this map so far...you did an amazing job, the puzzles are brilliant, and everything is perfect. One of my favorite cooperative maps since Aperture Valentine.

I suspect we were relatively close to solving the last puzzle, but we simply could not think of a way to get someone to go through the fling panel, be blocked by the light bridge, and fall onto the light bridge placed by a portal. It wasn't frustrating being stuck though, and the other puzzles were great enough so we still enjoyed this map a lot. Also, great job with the design.

Kudos and thank your for making such a wonderful map, you certainly put that time to good use! 5/5.

:cube: :cake: :cube:

Thank you for your feedback.
It is very nice to read such words, after so many hours of work - so yeah, thanks for that! :)

Here is a little hint for the last puzzle, don't worry I wont spoil too much:

Awesome map with good puzzles, but I think we solved the last chamber unintendedly
Here's my playthrough:

5/5. Excellent.
Thanks for mapping!
Cheers! :)

I've subscribed to this chamber.... but I can't find a damn partner....

Well, i hope you can find someone to play with. :)
You could try to wait for random people - there is a button to do so, below the list
of friends to invite to your game. Just select the map, and then click play and below
the list of friends, there is that button - but i guess you have to wait a while for
someone to join.

Thanks for your feedback and for the video.

May I ask: did you have that lag the whole time, or was it just the video?
I tried my best to optimize the map (visleafs, areaportals, etc.), but there is a lot of
detailing in that map, and I am not sure if that might still be a problem for slower PCs.

Yes, you have found that one thing I could not really find a fix for.
I don't like that solution, but there is a little bit of space, which allows that
fast reflexes midair portal... but it really is not the solution i aimed for.

Well, anyway: Thanks for the video - it was fun to watch and interesting to see what
you guys tried and how you solved it.

Both actually. My computer is lousy and can't handle huge maps. The recorder also cause some lag so yeah. Not entirely your map's fault.

Definitely; the map would have a lag session probably around every 10 seconds, but it was my computer.

I'll tell you where we were. We had the cube on the button on the high up platform activating the blocker bridge. My partner was up on the cube respawning platform, able to get enough momentum by flinging through the angled panel to the light bridge I would place there. Our problem was that we couldn't find a way to get his portal on the angled panel from up there, and I couldn't put my portal there for him because I controlled the light bridge for him to land on.

We tried both being up there at the same time, giving us no advantage. We tried putting his portal on the panel beforehand and then getting him up to the cube respawn platform, but as far as we could see it was impossible.

Basically, it was where they were in the video before they did the unintended solution- which we tried, but couldn't pull off.

fan-tas-tic map!

This is the solution we used in the last part:

Thanks for the video, Lp!
That is exactly the solution I was aiming for. Well done.

@Dr.Toaster Waffles:
Well, it seems like the map is too big to run without lag on slow PCs.
As I said: I tried to optimize what was possible and Lpfreaky and LuckyRJ
were giving me great feedback when they playtestet the map. So I really
tried to get all their feedback into the map to improve the performance.

After all, it might just be too detailed for slow PCs in such a big map.
Would be nice to know where the limit is, and which PC specs are needed for this map.
But I don't really know how to figure that out, without any testing enviroment.
