Creative Commons

I just replied in the post about map packs, but i think this deserves its own thread, if that's okay with you msleeper :-)

I think that if twp would embrace creative commons, we could actually have a repository not only of maps, but of map sources so that if a mapper doesn't mind, then other mappers can have the source code of their map, to reuse bits a pieces here and there for example.

that would be very cool, especially for beginning mappers like me, to see as much map source as possible and that way get better at mapping faster.

there are many different kinds of creative commons licenses, from public domain practically up to all rights reserved, and then many things in between. I think all mappers ought to take a look over at http://creativecommons.org/ , and msleeper since you're working on redoing the site design, maybe now's a good time to incorporate creative commons so everybody knows what everybody wants. :-)

I think what might be easier is for me to create a new download category called Map Source or Map VMFs or something along those lines, where people can upload their VMFs if they'd like to do so.

ya that would be really cool... but the part that would really be cool is to see the proper (cc) symbol next to each thing. that way everybody knows exactly what the author has in mind for redistribution..

would you like built-in creative commons license making options on an upload page? (you could choose a license or do nothing)
*yes, that would be convenient.
*nah, i'd rather keep people in the dark. why are you bothering me with this?

I wish you had another option in the poll. . .

- Naah; just add distrubution/licensing info to the zipped map.

While I dont mind if TWP added licensing to their upload. . . many other websites I may put my map wont have it. . .so I'd just as soon just add it to the zip files under an explicit licensing file.

As for downloading freely given decompiled maps/examples. . . there isnt anything physcially preventing it right now, is there? Cant they just store it under the Tutorials section, or something? Thats a semi-logical place; although it might be nicer to have a specific section for it, but really. . . there is nothing that keeps anyone from doing this right now other than some policy statnig that decmopiled maps shouldnt be given on the site.

so you think there should be a "default license," such as "(cc) non commercial distribution, attribution, do not alter" included with every map?

i just thought for organization's sake there ought to be a section for map sources...

Well, now that you've brought it up in the mappack thread, I know I'll be adding one. Everyone can do what they want, but it makes sense to me to make my wishes known; and adding it to the zipped pack seems the least hassle to me since it would work everywhere. If TWP added it to uploading, I WOULD use it, however; but I would still add it to the zip because the other websites probably wouldnt have the feature.

I wouldnt mind at all if there was a category for decompiled maps; makes sense to me, and it would be more organized, IMO. But I also know that a website designer may not be wanting to add a new category until its shown that its needed. . .so when there are 15 decompiled maps sitting in TWP somehwere (like under tutorials, perhaps), then its been clearly shown that adding a new section is NEEDED, and not just desired.

I might add one myself illustrating how to do frictionless surfaces, etc.

Ya I think if you're going to make a piece of intellectual property, which is basically how i've made my living for years in general, then putting the (cc) with it is a smart move. you'd be surprised at how many people contact me wanting to pay licensing fees to stick some piece of art i did into a presentation or trade show logo or something...

as for putting in source of maps, i think it would be awesome. it would greatly accelerate map development and progress, especially if mappers would create their maps as much in the form of pre-fabs as possible, so that really cool elements could easily be copied/pasted then altered at will.
