does this work with disk?

i wanna make my own maps but would hammer work with the original portal game disk?

i got this because it was cheeper then on steam and i don't have a credit card. yet.

i know there is this thing called "portal in game editor" but it looks awful and stupid.

You can, as long as you put the regestration key into steam. (I think.)
