How big should one map be?

Page 1 of 3Next

I did some HL2 mapping when it first came out, but never really produced a finished map, cause I could never get the hang of placing enemies and stuff (which is why I love Portal mapping! :D)

But I never really knew how big I should make one map? What's the upper limit?

In terms of file size, the largest original Portal map is just over 50MB, and it's the 19th test chamber.

The maximum limit of a map would be around 50mb, but if it is that big, then it would either be SO detail that it's not funny, doesn't change map for ages or, has loads of leaks.

 :? Well thats embarrasing... my maps are all under 10MB....

Nothing wrong with that, but under 10 mb does sound just a little small

what we should be debating really is how many puzzles and what average play time should a map be, because those are the things that really count

Its so funny back in mapping for hl for DoD 10 mb was HUGE, like no one would download it and it was blacklisted for being too big, hehe

I have NEVER released a made that was higher than 6mb i think, for hl2 that is.
Be sure that the smaller your map is the better, but if you want to add more, thats all good.

!!! NOTE !!!
Adding water to your map correctly can tell if your map has leaks!

No i'm not just talking about leaks as in apart of the outside black stuff is revealed into the actual map, i'm talking about entities/props that are leaked into the outside world.

:wut:

Leaks are not literal, water doesn't affect them. You can see if your map has a leak by looking at the compile log, and/or loading the point file for your map.

That's another thing that gets me going, back in the old days if you had a leak your map would stop compiling! Made things so much easier.

CAUTION: Do not let mapster add water to your map! He's not a real plumber!
