Portal and Hammer not working cohesively?

Hello, I am new here at ThinkingWithPortals.com

I have encountered a problem with my Portal Authorizing Tools Beta as of about two mouths ago. When launching hammer i will either get no activity or processes (it wont launch) or I will launch it and it will show the splash screen saying "Hammer World Editor" but will stop responding. Launching hammer from the bin results in the same thing.

I did some digging on TWP and found this thread http://forums.thinking.withportals.com/mapping-help/problems-after-17-06-14-update-t9917.html Following the steps fixes my hammer but kills my Portal 2 (as in it crashes after the valve logo). Validating/ trying the other fix on the page listed before restores portal but destroys hammer back into a non launching/ stalling state.

As far as i can tell no one has encountered the same problem. Ive tried uninstalling both softwears and reinstalling them again to no avail. Any help is appreciated! My thanks to anyone who is willing to help me tackle this problem. I am currently mapping for a mod as well as many personal projects that I need to make progress on xD This is my last resort.

(Im running Windows 8.0)

Hey, welcome to twp!

It really sucks that your hammer refuses to work!
The fact that the fix from a few months back works is a good sign.

[...]Since most of you run off a windows 7/8 now probably, here's a fix for hammer. Replace your Common/Portal 2/Bin/ folder with this:

So your problems are in that folder.

My suggestion is to rename the /bin/ folder to something else like /~bin/ go to steam and validate your tools and game. This should now fail, and re-download the bin folder. Hopefully that'll help. :)

Lp,
Your fix as suggested worked brilliantly! Hammer and portal 2 both ran and worked together allowing me to map for most of the day. I soon learned that this is only temporary for after trying to launch hammer after closing it, i encounter the same freezeing on the splash screen. as of now i will need to validate both and rename the bin every time i want to run hammer. though this is better then before i think i might need a true computer wizard to sort this out :(. Thanks to you again for helping me out so quickly!

try to see if your portal 2/update/ folder has a bin folder in it.
if it has, empty it and try to remove the write permissions. hopefully that'll fix it.

...or just check whats the difference between the saves ~bin and the re-downloaded vin folder (before you launch hammer)
if its justsome comfig then you only need to save that, if not, then just save the fill (newly downloaded) bin folder as new_bin, and copy it back (as afresh) when you encounter the problem. IF copying it back not enough, then its maybe something outside that folder (config) that causes it.

as of now, hammer is working wonderfully with portal. though my maps are being quite random on their bugs, everything is back to normal :) thanks for helping me out
