Quote from Beer-Me on January 27, 2008, 8:51 am4 player multiplayer? Pfft. It can handle the processing power of more people, its the NETCODE that cant.
This thing could take a VERY long time. The last mod that had portal mp took about a year, but that was using the hl2 mod sdk rather than portal.

Quote from MrTwoVideoCards on January 27, 2008, 9:23 amYeah true, but the fact that this is the real portal, mean theres far more code to implement. Also having multiple portals up at once is another thing that becomes a problem, Portal still has FPS Issues with portals open, Imagine more than 5 open in a single Vis Leaf. The horror.

Quote from Hyakkidouran on January 27, 2008, 9:32 amI personnally don't think it is worth the effort. It will be very hard to do and probably not be very fun.
"Portal multiplayer" is to me as absurd as "Monkey island multiplayer" or "Tetris multiplayer" or "Tomb raider multiplayer"...
Exploration and puzzle aren't multiplayer experiences, IMO. And that is precisely the spirit of portal.

Quote from sKoToSa on January 27, 2008, 10:44 amThey guy has already succefully made it so that people can walk through Portals, he is just working out a few bugs and such.
I think Portal Multiplayer wether it is co-op, ctf, or deathmatch will be freakin awsome. I mean come on, think about it, the posabiltys....

Quote from Hyakkidouran on January 27, 2008, 11:46 amI know a guy who is an amazing programmer, and he does games for fun.
His code is professionnal quality, and he plays with complex math like the voronoi diagram easily.
But his games aren't really enjoyed by the players, they are not very fun. even if they are technically impressive.Because you can code something doesn't mean it will be fun.
Just listen to the audio commentary of Portal : making sure the very single rooms of portal are fun and understandable was a crapload of work for valve's game designers...
I don't believe amateurs will be up to the task of doing this job for the multiplayer, which is even more complex.
Of course, if they prove me wrong, then it's perfect. But my first opinion on this whole "portal multiplayer" is that it has much more probability of sucking hard than anything else.

Quote from sKoToSa on January 27, 2008, 12:17 pmHey you could be right, I hope and very well think that Portal MultiPlayer will be a sucess if they manage to do it correctly.
I remember a year before Portal came out playing Exite online(for those who don't know Exite was a Half Life 2 Mod that emitated Portal and you could even play it online) and having so much fun spawning Portals under people and setting traps for them and shooting them through the Portals and the maps I was plalying on then were utter crap.
I would love to do co-op maps or some sort of racing game to the finish useing Portals to find the quickest root to the end.
Only time will tell, but this whole Portal thing is open for a lot of stuff...
