You do own Half life 2 (or Ep1/2) and have it installed? Because otherwise it would be obvious since Portal does not include the headcrab/zombie-models.
Edit: Or can't Portal generally access Half Life 2 files?

Quote from p0rtalplayer on November 13, 2010, 5:33 pmPortal comes with many of the files for half life 2, as it runs on the source engine. I'm pretty sure I remember being able to spawn zombies and such before I got half-life 2. Not sure why you'd be having a problem.

Quote from Motanum on November 13, 2010, 8:57 pmIf you own half life 2, you might try to copy the model (and its material textures!) to the corresponding portal folders. Then simply pak-rat it with your map when you release it. Just like you would with any custom textures.
(If it is Half life 2/hl2/models/headcrab then it should be portal/portal/models/headcrab) It is imperative that the directory is relatively the same, as the materials file relates to where it is in a directory, and if the stuff is not there, then it cannot be found.
Although, you must know. It might be against the User end agreement. But I think that VALVe's doesn't really care if it is within its own games. (Don't quote me on that).
I do not own Half Life 2 (yet :s) But I have seen the zombies in a map of portal. So I believe that Half Life 2's files are included in ALL source games (Not sure about L4D1/2 I haven't fooled around much in their sdks). Of course there is the alternative that the guy might have pak-rated the zombie files to the map so that I can see it nicely.
Hopefully this will give you an insight. Hopefully it will makes sense (I am a bit tipsy at the time of writing)
What I would do first, if you see an error model display in-game. Is to check your hammer properties and ensure everything should be as it should be. ^^

Quote from WinstonSmith on November 13, 2010, 11:18 pmIt's against VALVe's EULA/ToS/something to package VALVe content and distribute it without written express consent from them. Knowing them, they wouldn't care, but regardless of whether it's between their own games it's still possible for those who don't own games to access the content. They can't do all that much with it, but still.
Big question: how are you "spawning" the zombies/headcrabs? If it's through the console ingame, then something's weird, because as has been previously stated, I believe all HL2 content--with possible a few exceptions--can be accessed in Portal, and certainly so common NPCs. If you're "spawning" them by placing NPCs in Hammer and compiling the map, make sure the FGD is portal.fgd and not base.fgd; not sure it will make a difference, but check anyway.
And a final note, you shouldn't even need to package materials/models/stuff like that for zombies or headcrabs, because like I said, anyone who owns Portal will be able to access the HL2 content regardless of if they've bought HL2.
