Wow... I figured out how I can trim samples and make them mono, and the files are far smaller now! Though I didn't get them as small as you, rellikpd, they are all at least half their original size.

well glad i could ?help? and just fyi i use CoolEdit Pro :-/ though. when converting/using .wav's pretty much ANY audio program should give about the same results as a .wav isn't compressed at all. if you need/want any help you can email me the files or whatever :-p

After a lot of silence... I'm happy to announce this project has become a school project! That's right, we have to do a very special project and had to choose one of three options:

-Create a game in GameMaker;
-Create a game in any programming language;
-Create a game level in any level editor of any game;

Of course I've chosen the Hammertool.

Next to that, my map and my storyline went through many iterations over the past weeks, meaning that what I stated above about the storyline might not be completely true anymore. But don't worry, MALCom will still be your (un)pleasent and protocol-sick host.

These three will be present whatsoever:
MALCom - Male Acting Living Computer
ASHPD - Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device
ASLTA - Aperture Science Liquid Traversing Airboat

By the way, I'm not sure if this was intentional or not, but I notice a very subtle pun in "MALCom" given that it can be broken down into "Mal", Latin for "bad", and "Com" as in short for "Computer".

Jokes for nerds!

"Games are made out of smaller games ? turtles all the way down, until you hit the game that is so trivial and stupid it isn?t deserving of the name." --Raph Koster

Well, whether it was intentional or not remains the question, doesn't it? :twisted:

Nah, just kidding, that wasn't intentional indeed. But it does open up some new storyline opportunities... even if it's only for MALCom's oneliners.

To start, I've finally created an effect for the MaLCom-voices I like.

I'd just like to voice this: Whilst that is really quite cool, it is also quite hard to understand, you may want to consider making it easier to understand for in-game there are other sounds going on (like any background music you have, turret fire/vocals, portals opening/closing, footsteps....) and I can definatly imagine me ignoring it because it is too hard to tell what its saying without stopping and turning the speakers up just to hear it clearly.

I have to agree with youme. It was difficult for me to understand what the voice was saying without turning up my speakers. I am digging this idea though, I loved the airboat.

You may have already heard this but something interesting was said about how the GLaDOS voice was made in the Portal commentary:

"Once the recording was done, we processed all of the dialog to give it an extra computery edge. Here's that same line as it appears in the game, with the pitch constrained, pitch modulation suppressed, and the formant moved up."

I noticed that your MALCom voice sounds computery already but you may be able to make it sound more authentic by fiddling with the above effects in your sound program.

That's the problem, I'm using Dance eJay 7, which is build more for user friendlyness than features. Most of the computer-likelyness is of myself, as I have a monotone voice of myself and am quite well in producing a computer-like voice. But I'll see what I can do about the voice being ununderstandable, perhaps it's my Dutch accent that causes the problems, or perhaps my voice is simply so boring you fall asleep while listening to me...

...but that's the right thing for MALCom. He's different from GLaDOS on a few points, to start with he is rule-sick and wants everything done precisely according to the test protocols.

Hmm, if youd like, I can try and make a hover boat skin.

As you might have seen I've attempted the same, but I don't completely like the result. What I'm actually doing (in photoshop) is using the clone stamp tool a lot to give certain parts the same overall colour, and then use hue/saturation to make them white-ish. Well, I'm crap with texture making anyway, so...

If you could make one, you would have my eternal gratitude, including a spot in my credits-list :P

What I actually invisioned: large parts of the airboat white, such as the floaters, the steering wheel and the fan, but wires, connecting tubes, pipes and such black. Much like the Portal Gun. Oh, and of course the Aperture Science logo on the sides of the floaters.

But that's my vision. You may do whatever you want.
