Quote from Bosf on May 17, 2008, 12:33 pmif you place two portals very close to themselves (place between them smaller than 2 cm) And you will kick into one portal?I know but what happens if you will for very strange reason you will get inside them...you will be inside yourself and i think...it will hurt.

The device has been modified,so you has been PWNED!
Quote from pestchamber on May 17, 2008, 2:33 pmwhat would happend in the actual game if you placed a portal (somehow) on yourself and walked though the other one? omg game crash or something i have no idea. it would be funny to test this in realy life ... on an animal throwing it though a portal while having a portal on its chest xD

If you place two portal props in the same spot, they just intersect the way placing any two normal quads would - nothing interesting happens.

Quote from Fusion on May 17, 2008, 8:56 pmHas anyone mentioned that portals wouldn't be possible in real life because they can create gravitational potential energy out of nothing, defying conservation of energy?
For example the portal in the ceiling and portal in the floor trick. You would be able to keep falling without actually gaining any potential in the first place.

I agree with his conclusion that, barring direct conversion of matter to energy (e = mc^2), the energy would have to come from thermal energy. Essentially, as something gained more kinetic energy, it would lose its thermal energy, becoming very very cold and very very fast.
I wouldn't be so quick to rule something "impossible".

I guess I always assumed that real portals would require huge amounts constant power, more than what could be reproduced with using gravity and perpetual motion.

Perpetual motion is a crock, and gravity is a bank: you put energy in and you get energy out. (Except where noted above where you can wire transfer in energy from thermal energy, so to speak.)
