Test Subject #13 Storyline
Quote from youme on June 3, 2008, 7:24 pmStory A:
You play as an aperture science test subject, male, and you play though a new 20 levels that are harder and more punishing than the original portal levels. You play an active role in destroying a few of the test chambers, including much, much more BTS areas than before. In the end you face some sort of boss battle and I'd rather not reveal the ending
Story B:
You play as an indipendant inspector who has been sent to aperture science against their insistance that their reserch is all legit. you are greeted by a rather excentric scientist who shows you around before a terrible accident occurs (think Borealis?), the lab is thrown into chaos with scientists runing about everywhere trying to sort stuff out, you of course have no clue what is going on. The scientist showing you around tell you where you can wait thats safe (his office or something) he gives you directions and once you get there he does a video call thing to you and he tells you to stay put but of course you cant resist the temptation of looking around and you work your way into a huge almost empty chamber with scaffolding and something in the middle, you can't resist turning on the power as its all dark and nothing much seems to happen. the test chambers are accesible from this large silo... you're working backwards through them facing new challenges in doing them in reverse as you work further underground. the further you go the more 'awake' the prototype GLaDOS unit you turned on becomes, it makes things harder for you as you go through the level.
and I'd rather not reveal the ending of this one either.yeah, story A was my original idea but with Username's aid we planned out story B. so story B sounds a lot more developed.
Opinions? thoughts? suggestions? Anyone want to write a propper script based on either of these ideas?..etc etc

Quote from Syon on June 3, 2008, 7:33 pmI'd say I prefer story B as it's more of a departure from the standard type of test chamber storyline, yet still in the portal universe.

Quote from appunxintator on June 3, 2008, 7:59 pmI really like the idea of destroying test chambers, but story B is definitley better than A.
Maybe you could include the destruction in story B?

I probably don't need to tell you this, but if you really want to do the B one, prepare for a lot of work

Gameplay over story. everytime. a well developed set of maps. that are fun and progressive is more fun than a hardcoded story. cuz ultimately the more story you give the more "linear" that maps will seem, and a "I'm in your bts fucking with your stuff" should not seem linear, but you really won't have a choice. Where as test chambers ARE linear. so its ok if they SEEM linear...
i like the story developed in B. but like others i think destroying test chambers would be cool. plus i "like" test chambers. harder (but understandable) the better!

Quote from Bulska on June 4, 2008, 2:49 amI had a nice story-line too.
You awake from a bts bed with tin cans, a radio and such in a crappy bts area. Without portal gun.
You climb up stuff and such to get trough the bts area, when you're faced with a big wall. There's cracks in the wall allowing you to look trough.
Look around more and you will find explosive barrels. There is also a rocket turret with view over the cracked wall.
Guess what you do next ^^Well, once you reached the testing area, you'll be doing the tests, but you lack items from previous stages of the test chamber, you need to return to the bts area to collect some vital testing aperatus.
GLaDOS noticed your return in the testing area and tries to do anything to get rid of you. She makes things more difficult in the testing as you progress. So, she succesfully locks a door to a Cube Dropper, without you getting in.
Then by use of portals (you find the portal gun somewhere in the map) you can go trough bts area to get there, or, in some cases, get the cube from the bts area.My last idea for this map was the basic layout. 1 middle room with 6 towers. 6 testing chambers around it. In each testing chamber you are required to retrieve an energy pellet and a Weighted Storage Cube to the middle room. The energy pellet must go up inside the tower, getting catched. The Cube must be placed on top of the tower where a button is.
Only when all 6 towers are fully completed, you can fling yourself up, getting you to the exit.
But an exit elevator means GLaDOS can easily kill you... So step in the elevator and it will crash down. Get somewhere into bts area and you survive
To take people by suprise ^^YaY I finished the testing chamber!
'I will kill you!'
Huh? Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah! BOOM. dead. But your 2 ideas are cool too... although I dont get in story line 2 why the inspector is wearing a testing outfit with high heels.

Quote from Sleepwalker on June 4, 2008, 3:06 ambtw youme, i have an idea that i think you could pull off if you decide to go with story A. Make a few scientists still alive somewhere inside the complex, each trying to shut down GLaDOS via you (they would help you along the way). Idk if you think this is a good idea or not, I just wanted to throw it out there.

Quote from youme on June 4, 2008, 7:56 amSome good reponces, I'm interested to see if the votes end up differently after more are cast.
I personally like story B and think it will produce a more inovative MOD whilst A will just seem like more portal (which isn't exactly a bad thing, portal rocks after all)
Either story, I'll find someone to write a proper script with me and then we'll be developing that
