You go in mIRC with a problem, see loads of people "Woohoo people are in there, I can get my problem solved!"
You ask your question, and noone replies. People forget MIRC is on their taskbar. Even I do because there is no blink thing like MSN, not that it needs one.
At least with Vent you can hear people if theyre in and the chances are theyre not AFK.
That's my point.

Quote from Shmitz on October 26, 2007, 2:23 pmI'm not entirely sure about other IRC clients, but mIRC will turn a channel name red if someone speaks and the window is not in focus. I usually position my IRC window so that my channel bar is hovering right over my task bar, and leave a little gap there so even if I'm working on something I can see if a channel turns red.
That said, however, I'm of the philosophy that vent and IRC are not mutually exclusive.

Quote from pandar on October 26, 2007, 2:50 pmIs it not fine to just have both? In all fairness vent is a much easier way of communication. If you want have a problem and no one in IRC answers right away, you'll be fine, someone will answer eventually. It's no different than posting on the forums when nobody is available. It would be no different on vent considering most of the people that would be active on vent would probably be the same people active on IRC.

Quote from DiddyKong42 on October 26, 2007, 3:11 pmTheres some sponsors at gamesurge.net that sponsor people free 20 slot ventrillos for having like a constant 5-7 people idle in there channel if you guys wanted to xD.
Note: they don't just make you channels, they actually give you an entire ventrillo server for your use with full admin and possibly access on a FTP server.

I fire up IRC on my laptop while gaming and check it when I die, etc. Trying to carry on a conversation while defending the last point on Dustbowl isn't so easy.

I think vent server would be great, even if there wouldn't be alot of people. It would be cool to hear others talk. Another choice is our Steam Groups voice-chat. We could begin using it way more. (I don't know how much you have used it tho)
And chat would be more fun in Ventrilo than in IRC. I think it's totally different.
