Seems to me it's not an issue : if you have a portal outside, you can fire again a portal in your back on the concrete.
And you necessarily have a portal outside, whatever you do. Unless there is enough concret to fire two portals at once in the hatch...

In fact I like very much the idea of an "obvious but hard to do solution" with the pit, and a "less obvious but easier solution".
I didn't do it on purpose, but I think it gives the player that thinks of flinging from the hatches an interesting sense of freedom.
Also this is room 1, so it kinda fits to have an easy but open to several solutions problem.

They're only ideas to help you, this is your project and it is up to you to decide what you're gonna do with it.

i do agree though. i think that most puzzles "should" have more than one possible solution, and most do (even if not intended) i just wanted to let you know that the "pit" thing, i fell in one time. and said "screw this!" but luckily i know more ways to fling :-p some people may not. i like it. and it IS possible to do it the way you intended. so if someone is that "challenged" with it. then its doubtful they beat the full version of portal anyway. so who cares :-p
