[WIP] The Fall

Quote from Rivid31 on November 2, 2007, 1:08 amYeah. I guess I didn't plan for it to be much of a "thinking" puzzle. The solution is pretty obvious, as theres nothing else really to do. More of a reflex puzzle. Maybe I made it a little bit too fast. At any rate, its doable...

I knew that that was what I was supposed to do, but the momentum from the first drop can't send me over the first wall. And believe me I've tried!

Quote from Menkhor on November 22, 2007, 8:37 pmA nice map, I enjoyed it. Some good stumpers in there, and I like challenging maps.
I beat the second room without the cube. It's much simpler than it first appears to be. Here's how I did it:
At first I thought you had to bounce it off the angled corners, but then realized I could portal myself to to the ledge directly across from the ball launcher, then put a portal on the far wall (the top left of the ball launcher wall) as high as possible. After the ball has gone through, I simply replaced the portal on the same wall, but lower, which makes the ball higher when exiting the other portal (which is still facing the ball launcher). When done properly, the ball should bounce off the launcher directly up into the receptacle.
If this was not the intended solution, you've got to somehow make the ball last longer, and then I'll try it again using the slanted corners.
I do have a few qualms however. In the first room, it is not very clear at all what you are supposed to do. The only clue is
the arrow pointing to the "target goo", but that is confused by the other two pointing to the later needed hole in the wall
. You need to somehow hint at the solution better, or introduce the mechanic somehow.
In the second room, you really should fix it so people can't get the cube in there. *Edit* I see you fixed this by slamming the door shut as soon as you walk in the room? Nice.
And lastly, the flinging puzzle is simple, but very tough to do. Consider changing it to a combination puzzle, or making it about less reflex and more puzzle solving. It's not necessary though, just a suggestion.
Other than that, awesome job, one of my favs.

Quote from Adair on November 24, 2007, 2:05 amOK, this map got me frustrated. Also at the time I am typing this the videos you posted with your solutions seem to be missing.
I like the first puzzle now that I know how to do it.
Having to fling a sphere is fun, but I really solved the puzzle by accident the first time and it still took me half a minute to realize what I'd done.
By the way, the support column on the lift that rises from the goo had the black and pink design on it. (I downloaded it in the November contest entry map pack a few days ago, so nevermind if you already fixed this)
The second puzzle I also solved by accident in the same way that Menkhor described. It did not seem to be the intended solution, but after retrying I couldn't find another way to solve it.
I liked the third part where you
fling back and forth through the room.
That is my favorite room in the map. I also like Player 1's speed-run approach to solving it.
And finally I had as much trouble as everyone else with the last puzzle. The concept was simple enough, but
getting both portals on the ground and successfully dropping into one with the downward momentum is a lot to do after flying through the upper fizzler. I tried several times, eventually gave up and no-clipped up to sit on the wall in the fizzler grid. I have now successfully done it as intended, but its not something I would choose to do again. I suggest a longer drop after flinging through the upper fizzler and bring the bottom of the dividing wall in the middle of that room up just a bit so that its a little easier to get a portal near the far wall.
Thanks for the map, and for reading my long semi rantish feedback on it,
Adair
