3d skyboxes in portal?

Ok so i tried to use a 3d skybox recently and when i use portals you can see the skybox through the map. Is there a way to fix this? or do skyboxes not work properly in portal?

Please someone let me know if it works normally or if there is something i can do to fix it

Hey well at least he's trying new things.

Maybe you could post a screenshot because I don't really understand what's not working. 3D skyboxes should work in any Source game, including Portal.

though this doesn't appear to be his actual problem. his problem is that the skyboxes are viewable "THROUGH" the map. i know you can use 3d skyboxes though. i've seen other mappers use them.. (as in the accompanied link where he sets up a "larger than normal" battle between a tripod and combine soldiers) but. the link by Mr2VC does prove that even if you get them working they are not visible through portals. so it would look stupid as a "main" element in a map. however if you were just using it in a cut scene, or area where the player had NO access to portals then it might be ok. as to why you can't get it working. who knows. try following the link from Mr2VC and see if you have them set up right in the first place

So through the map as in the 3d skybox is being rendered over the top of other things in the map?

yeah it seems that when you look through the portals that the skybox renders infront of parts of the map. I'm pretty sure my map was sealed off correctly and I also was testing it using cordon bounds or whatever. Ill prob try again . Its mostly in areas that you can't shoot portals / or have a chance to look at it using a portal... so I think I'm covered there.

You could try decompiling the valve map outside App labs, stick a playerspawn and see what it does, I don't know, but it might work.

its rendering through my map!

HELP PLZ I REALLY WANT TO PUT THIS IN MY MAP AND NOT HAVE IT MESS UP

edit: It seems to be only showing off the terrain through the map. Perhaps its a bug or something? I'm going to try out different stuff but someone please clue me in if they know something

That being said if you have sky boxes in a map, and a portal in the map. craziness will happen. ONLY WAY you can use skyboxes in a map without any fear of it breaking is to NOT HAVE ANY PORTALS ACTIVE. like in a cut-scene, or a map where the player has no access to portals. you cannot fix this.

because it is visible through my portal and its cutting through my map ?

so like. im trying to figure out a way to make sure it doesn't show up through my portals.

So with the screenshot when you go through the portal all that terrain stuff disappears?

The way you make sure it doesn't happen, is you don't have a 3D skybox. This is a technical limitation - there is NO workaround.
