Ok, im going to post here, some of my ideas that i have had for Omega.

  1. The Low Energy Pellet Launcher

the LEPT basically is an AR2, without the ability to shoot bullets.
its orbs can activate special buttons, knock cubes off buttons, knock over turrets, etc

ill post a video of it soon

  1. The Aperture Science Superdense Weighted Cube

effectively, this is a cube which activates its own type of buttons(green ones) because it is more dense then normal cubes. it also cannot activate normal buttons(excuse coming soon )

  1. Timed ball catchers

Just a ball catcher with a timer, not that special

questions? comments?

(if a mod feels this should be merged with the omega thread, just say so)

how about? "Regular buttons have a "max" weight, so anything OVER that will not activate said button" but "Regular Cube + Player weight" is NOT greater than a "Heavy Box"

like a weight puzzle (ie: the first scene in Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark)

ok, good excuse

one thing is, should i have the box not pick up-able by the player?

that depends on the puzzle. but i would say it needs to be pick-up'able

keep in mind that the portal gun is basically a gravity gun (when you are picking up stuff) atleast thats how most people think of it. you could say that the "Aperture Science Portal Gun allows you to interact with other Aperture Science Property regardless of weight" or some other such bullshit answer

Actually, cubes only movable via portals (i.e. too heavy to lift) might make an interesting puzzle element.

i agree to that. you could have more than one type of Heavy Cube, allowing youself more puzzle opportunities

i think ill do that

have 2 types of heavy cube, both being able to press green buttons

grey cubes, and black cubes

grey cubes can be picked up by the player, black cubes cant

What will the cubes look like? Will it look like a Weighted Storage Cube with gray/black lights coming from it, or solid colors? Or maybe you have something cooked up?

Sadly, controlling physics objects via portals is very hard and high inaccurate. If you were to require the player to place the object on a button...there would have to be a lot of guiding done to insure it lands on the button and doesn't slide off a lot.

that is a very good point...

And what if the box ends up at a place portals can't properly transport it? Like on a metal floor, or in a tough corner?

For the sliding-off-the-button problem, you could make the buttons in a glass tube. As for getting stuck, make everything portal-able when you have to use them.

Make the cube destroyable, explodable or something like a custom breakable crate. Dunno if that's good.

maybe if you hit it with the portal projectile blob it 'pops' the cub into the air that would help if it gets stuck, you might be able to do it with a few parented detection boxes

I think with some thought put into the design of the map, you can easily guide the player's portal placements without making it seem like there are only specific areas they should be shooting at (unless that's what you want them to see, of course.)

I personally think it would be cool if the block was so heavy that when it fell through a portal (let's say it went straight down and came out the ceiling the same way) that it hits the floor and rocks the room a little bit. It would freak the player out a little, maybe, but the would stand clear of it, for sure, and it would be a nifty effect. Plus it really conveys the idea that they REALLY can't pick it up lol

Why not push it back to modular floors when it's on metal floors?

And the mapper should avoid making pits where the thing can fall in without a way out.

Just so ya know, i made a green super button and cube, as well as a red and blue one [One burns you and the other is very light].

There either a post above me or below or in the realeased section.
