SVN is a software which allows people to work on the same files together. There are a few svn-hosters online and I wanted to know if anyone is interested in making maps using such a revison control system.

The advantages would be that one person could make the puzzles and someone else the lightning or details without having to bother with hundert versions of the same file.

This might actually be useful. I am quite handy with the I/O-system of Hammer, but my environmental design skills are kinda lacking. My brother, on the other hand, can create amazingly looking maps, but without any functionality. (You don't wanna know what he did to the poor func_door, which wasn't a func_door in the first place but some other random brush entity.)

I thought SVN is suitable for source code only. Could you also use it to make maps? I mean, aren't there some binary files? I don't know, I am new to SVN, we are making a project using it at school

SVN can also manage binary files, but since version 4 Hammer uses VMF, which is a text based format.

@Ricotez: I'm not good at level design too and thats what gave me this idea.

I hate when people touch my stuff. So I'm not all that interested.

However could be useful to share ideas. . .

We tried to start one of these before. It didn't work at all. Best of luck.

Do you mean the project where the mappers were supposed to give their vmfs to the forum-mods?

I know this is similar, but i hope after the release of portal 2 (or hl2ep3 or hl3) there are more people who want and can help.

No, it was an SVN where we could upload prefabs, work on maps, etc but I just didn't work.

Why didn't you work? that's a bit mean.

Back on topic, it COULD work, but only if everyone was able to work together well. Which would only happen if we all knew each over in real life, and could contact the others via voice to discuss things... sounds a bit like steam voice chat...

Why is it mean? I'm just saying it didn't work. Lack of people submitting things was really it. Seems like people would much rather work on completing a full map for themselves than bother with all the effort that goes into sharing prefabs.

I believe he was referring to the fact that in your earlier post you said that
