[SP] Gymnasium Part 2

Another fitness test from the folks at Blapperture Mesa. Test subjects will once again be required to display speed and dexterity, though as always they will also be required to use their heads in order to proceed.

Screenshots:

It's not really necessary to play Part 1 first, but you should anyway. You can find it here:
http://forums.thinking.withportals.com/downloads.php?view=detail&df_id=1898

This should actually be a little easier than Part 1, I think, though some players might find a couple of new mechanics at play.

The map was started in the PTI editor and finished in Hammer. It's a little borderline whether I did enough to it to put in the [SP] section, so I won't begrudge a mod if they decide to move it. I would have liked to have done more work on the visual side of things but I'm off on a long holiday soon and wanted to get it out there before I go. Hope you all enjoy it!

Weird, screenshots won't work for some reason. Here they are:

That link to part 1 didn't work either, but it's in my sig.

Much tougher than Gymnasium 1 in my opinion, but I guess that's how work-out works.

People will either love or hate you for the solution for the weight-lifting. The solution for the funnel room is just awesome, very nice! The last room was fitting the sports theme better again, just great. 5/5!

Cheers zivi. Have updated the map to fix that boatload of exploits you found, so cheers for that as well! Have also shot my roommate who was supposed to be playtesting the thing.

I honestly thought it would be easier than the last map, but I guess it's really difficult to tell when you're the guy that made it....

Also posted in the PTI...
Anyhow, here is how I got the cube inthe funnel room - I got the cube in the funnel chamber by pinning against the drop with a funnel portal on the opposite wall, jumping down and placing a portal so it dropped and I caught it.
Excellent map - thanks for creating...

@quatrus - Weird, the map should have been updated a good 9 hours ago to get rid of that solution (it's one of the many oversights that zivi7 pointed out). I just double checked by re-downloading through the Workshop; that particular portal surface should be black now.

I'm sorry if you had difficulty with the last part. It's supposed to be a little more of a skill shot and less of a puzzle, but I tried to make it as easy as possible (cube-toss-challenged myself). With the player's momentum as they fly out of the wall panel it should just be a matter of a quick flick upwards - as long as you get it in the vertical ballpark it should find its way home. Anyway, I understand if that bit's not your cup of tea. Glad you enjoyed the rest!

Good map with some pretty original puzzle ideas. Solution of the first puzzle was already used in The Ledge if I solved it the intended way.

It was pretty easy and it only took me about 5 min to solve it but I still enjoyed it.

Great job and I hope we will see more maps from you!

Great video, cool that you recorded till the evaluation and that fade-out/slow-down music ending was pretty nice. What's the music?

Shakky: you solved mine the intended way, but I obviously found an exploit in The Ledge. I think I know the bit you mean, though - with two laser cubes in a small room, right?

Anyway, great vid and a nice bit of D&B. I'm impressed you got it so fast, if not a little disappointed; hoped it would be a bit more challenging than that... Still, glad you enjoyed it. I probably won't be putting any more maps out for a little while as I'm going on a big holiday soon, but check my sig for other maps I've made (Gymnasium 1 is my personal fave, probably).

@zivi7. I'm glad you liked it! The song is Blood sugar by Pendulum.

Nice little map. I saw Shakkys vid of The Ledge and used this for the first room. The intended solution of the funnel room was great... Never thought of using the funnel this way. Very clever but it's possible to jump from the button on the glass. That made it alot easier.
The gel room was a bit too short in my opinion. You could have thought about something more there...
Btw the gel is not needed. It's possible to throw the cube on the button by placing a portal at the very top.
I experimented in the gel room and found a nice idea for my next map. Thanks for sharing

Markiu - thanks for the feedback. Looking forward to your gel puzzle; hope it's not too evil...> marKiu wrote:

I swear, every map I make I get a new bane of my mapping existence - this time it was jumping on buttons (already had zivi jumping through the ceiling in the first release). Anyway, thanks for pointing that out. Still, I couldn't actually pull it off myself, so I might leave that one in for the ninja players. Ditto for the no gel solution for the final room - possible, yeah, but I found it a lot harder without than with, and I'd like to keep it at a level of difficulty that's somewhat accessible to more casual players. Turns out I do need to update anyway, though, because I totally forgot to do the player clipping on that hole in the wall...> Quote:*

Yeah, it is a bit short, but like I said in the OP - big holiday coming up and I wanted to finish first; I didn't want to half-ass another puzzle in and push it out with barely any time for bugfixes etc. before I leave. I might come back to it at another point and flesh it out a bit. .

*EDIT: Haha, actually, on closer inspection you can just place it in. Right, will sort that out!

Very nice puzzle ^^
I'm loving these hybrid puzzles, marked out in the puzzle creator then tweaked in hammer - seems to be a nice tradeoff between design time and flexibility. My only real concern was that this particular gymnasium has a distinct lack of cheerleaders.

Edit: Some alt solutions

Yeah, I'm personally really liking the new editor - makes troubleshooting puzzles and trying out new things really quick and easy, where my rudimentary Hammer skills would have me working for 8 hours and then scrapping all of it at times.> Quote:

Ah, shit, what's sicklebrick gonna to my map now....

Actually, nothing too bad, although that pressing the button through the portal may have to be stamped out. Love the catch in the first room. Cheers for the vid!

Yeah, I didn't expect that to work at all... especially considering how picky cubes can be through portals!

Fun map! Especially the cubethrowing was really cool.
This is what I came up with, but I'm quite sure my solution for the second chamber was unintended:

Haha, yeah, just a bit. Thought I'd stamped out that kind of thing but evidently not... Thanks, I'll see if I can do something about it.

BTW, you can just shoot a portal at the end of the funnel from above. You don't need to actually go through it.

Stuck again . . . refusing to watch video - again . . . don't even wanna watch "The Ledge" video. How to get through the first fizzler in first room. Very preplexing and with almost no visible mechanics to apply some special trick with.

BTW I just finished Gymnasium 1 which was one of your easier puzzles IMO.
But still fun - racing to the exit in 2 seconds. I love minimalist maps !!!

P.S. Boxy Trixy remains my favorite map and it is far from minimalist - even though it is Portal 1, I just love that map..

The best I can say about that is not to think too hard, as the solution is kind of stupid... There's a hefty clue in the map description too.

I'd be interested in knowing how you did the second half of Part 1, if you wouldn't mind explaining.
