2D skybox problems.
Posted Apr 15, 2013
Ok so i tried to find a post about this but no luck. I am trying to make a simple map with both a 3d and 2d skybox. I have the skycamera working and the name of the l4d skybox that is packed with portal 2 set on map properties. But it doesnt work and i have a few questions about it.
1. How do i work around the fact that there is no 2d skybox tool texture.
2. Sometimes the skybox works but it makes EVRYTHING else vanish when i am in a visleaf that sees it. How do i fix this?
3. Is it possible to have both a 3d and 2d skybox in portal 2?

1) Just use the normal toolsskybox texture.
2) VALVe wrecked the Sky shader in Portal 2 so skyboxes from other games do that. Clone the skybox, change the shader to UnlitGeneric, and change $ignorez to 0. Or just use one somebody already converted, I think there's a nice day one in the FGEMOD files.
3) Certainly! In fact, you need to if you want a 3D skybox. The 2D one is always displayed behind it, through every skybox-textured face in the 3D skybox. The 3D skybox in turn is displayed through every skybox-textured face in the normal world.

what you need to do ifg you're using the default l4d2 skybox in portal 2 is set that in your map properties as the skybox you're using. Then you have to make a reference geometry for your map and everywhere where you want a 2d-skybox you use the tools/skybox texture in the skybox.
If you want to know how to make the reference geometry and other 3d-skybox stuff; check out this video I made a while ago:
