It never occurred to me to use the chair. I used the rocket.

I was stuck on that level and eventually noclipped it. My friend told me to do the chair thing, but I would've never thought of blowing up the tube

me neither, I ran around that place for a while, trying to get up there.

Then I thought, hey there are stuff back there.
So I placed a portal near the vent (closest where I could) And walked back to the office and placed on there, 2 chairs trough the portal, putting the portals aside and stacking all the way

The chair was the first thing that made sense. If it were real life I'd grab a chair...not blow up a tube of super-thick glass. Maybe if the glass had cracks all over it and looked breakable...or had wires dangling off of it to get my attention. I don't even think I noticed a tube there. :O

It was set shortly after you'd travelled through a broken cube tube and just after you learned that rockets can break glass.

There is one instance of the game I actually solved a puzzle in an alternate way then Valve intended it, on my first playtrough.

Some of you might remember this specific room, right after the rocket launcher:

Yes, the vent was too high. And there was no obvious way to get in it at first glance...

So I eventually solved it like I would in real life:

http://www.xs4all.nl/~dianajo/escape_010001.jpg

that's how i did it, with the chair. it was only later, when i saw somebody do it with the launcher, that i saw that other way. if they'd stuck an emancipation field into that room or nearby, i guess i'd have kept trying to figure out something else, until the rocket launcher occurred to me.

BTW, did anybody see the youtube vid of somebody defeating GlaDOS with a turret, super duper fast? heh. that's creative thinking, but the question is where did the turret come from?

the turret comes from the massive turret ambush. at least thats where the person who did the 13 min speed run got his from.

Using a chair never occurred to me in the first place, since it was obvious that the puzzles were designed with boxes and rocket launchers as the main elements, and chairs strictly as decorative with no intended function other than looking pretty.

I used the chair as well. But I brought the chair with me through the vent to see if it would break the fan (it didn't, of course, but it was fun to watch the chair get crushed).

I had no idea that you could solve the puzzle the Valve way until now. smacks forehead
