Dark blotches behind objects in low light level enviorments

I'm just wondering if it's possible to get rid of blotches like this https://i.imgur.com/FN4uwqg.jpg or https://i.imgur.com/jmBVB9F.jpg
I sort-of did it by adding a light, which I am OK with for the most part, but I want to know if I can do it without lighting the area as I have an idea for an atmosphere.

Open the properties on those objects and set "disable shadows" to "yes"
