[Feedback] GLaDOS voice

Before you listen:

This is supposed to be set after the timespan of the official game. I have planned that GLaDOS' voice coil has been severely damaged, and the voice will be more bizarre and harder to interpret. Here's a sample:

Note that this is the raw sound. I have yet to insert various effects like beginning and end beep.

Before you look under the spoiler, try to understand what GLaDOS is supposed to be saying. See if you understood it.

GLaDOS speech script?
Welcome to the Aperture Science gravity shifting test area. Warning: Aperture Science is not responsible for skin raptures, beheading, death or other bi-effects of the gravity shifting test chambers.

Please leave feedback, and tell me what you thought she was saying before you read the spoiler. I need to know if it's to hard to understand.

Thanks.

(PS: Woah, I'm suddenly revealing some of my next map pack's plot. D: )

Sorry to say its really bad. It's not clear. Plus, it's not lifelike enough.

GLaDOS still had lifelike elements.

If you know a girl who can mimic the voice, that might be your best bet.

I know.

Unfortunately. you can't make anything by pasting the original speeches together.

I think it would be reasonable to create a new voice for GLaDOS altogether. Not a 'broken' voice, necessarily, but just any other female voice. It doesn't need to be exact, since we DID destroy GLaDOS. Whose to say her reincarnated self would have the same voice?

Some text-to-speech + some effects would probably create a voice worth putting in your maps.

However... this might not work in the long-run for single maps, if everybody had their own voice for GLaDOS it wouldn't work that well. However, if you were making your own mod, such as CCC or Quest for Cake, which spans many levels, this would be an appropriate alternative.

I'm making a mod, yes. The name will be Post-Portal. I'm not about to say anything else about it until I have a playable demo ready.

I mostly create my GLaDOS voices by pasting the existing ones together. This one, however, was preformed my Microsoft Sam and Diamond Voice Changer 5.5.

If you wouldn't mind, I would like it if you had a go at the script found in the spoiler above.

Do you actually sound like GLaDOS or do you use a voice changer to do it?

I can only understand Welcome to the Aperture Science Gravity..." After that, nothin'.

I know you're trying to make her voice sound broken, but you can create this impression with just a few glitched-out words while still keeping most of the speech intelligible. I would suggest you re-do the effect so that maybe 1 word in 6 gets dropped or covered by static/feedback.

Yeah, I've been thinking about doing that.

Nill on the somethingawful forums has made a pretty close sample, i'll dig it out later.

The easiest way is to use the AT&T crystal female voice and edit that sound sample.

edit:
sound sample 1

sound sample 2

sound sample 3

Quote:
I used AT&T Crystal. Microsoft Mary might work fine too, but you can get free samples of Crystal saying whatever you want from the Natural Voices site.
Then just boost the formant by ~150 cents and flatline the pitch modulation in your favorite pitch shifting program. You can finetune the pitch adjustments as needed, but the default output is generally ok.
I'm sure there are probably command-line tools for doing formulaic pitch adjustments but I can't say I know of any myself.

The game commentary says:

Quote:
pitch constraint, pitch modulation suppressed and the formant moved up

Basically, put the clip in Audacity or something, then pitch shift.

EDIT:

I achieved this with a pitch shift and a phaser effect:

(unedited)

Now I have to edit it. I wonder if Sone Vegas 7.0 will do the job.

I am trying to get it sound right in vegas, but since I know next to nothing about sound editing it's all trial and error.
