Well as you know I have Hammer. But I suck at it. Really hard. But yet I am great at google sketchup. I have noticed that people use sketchup for L4D2 maps. And Obviously L4D2 and Portal are made by the same company so I was wondering if you could use sketchup for Portal map making.

Yes there is a plugin for hammer. Just be VERY CAREFUL that you have no leaks... and you will still have to do all your logic and trigger making in Hammer.

Is there any alternate programs good for mapping/

I use cinema 4d, better than maya, like 3ds max but easier, and you can make your own texture maps, bump maps, light maps easy. XSI Softimage for animate and export to mdl.

I think is much better and easy using hammer... the unique problem is the beta bugs, ram, etc... But is the better for all.
