Hello. Recently I've been trying to use hammer, but it randomly crashes when I try to work on any brushes and such. It only started happening yesterday when I got a mod called Aperture Ireland, It needed to port files from Hl2 and Portal 1. I chose the amximalist option, porting all files and VPKing them. It told me to rebuild the scenes.image, so I did, and after that i tried to use hammer but it crashed when I tried to work on my map. I thought it was a glitch so I rebooted my system but the problem still occurs. :notwant:
Help would be greatly apperciated.
Thanks.

Since the last update I have random freezes while opening the "Open File" window. Moth has a similar problem, but for him it's the "Save File" window. Seems like the new Hammer version has some very little bugs.

I had the same problem with the Open button. But It managed to fix itself some how.

It disappeared when I once let Hammer sit on the open dialog until it worked.

OK so then I'm not the only one... I've been doing much hammer the whole weekend and hammer crashed when I was attempting to load a map file: the window froze right before even showing the default folder content. I veriffied the integrity of the local files and BAM! 23 files to recover!... Never happened that to me before... only 2-3 files... Weird. This freezing happened 2 times in the whole weekend though.

Whoa...23 files? Did that fix the problem? (And did it work without deleting any custom stuff? I don't want to lose my maps!)

I've had the open error too, validating also provided me with 23ish files. It did reduce the crashes quite a bit. And validating the files shouldn't cause you to lose any files =D

Yes Felix, you shouldn't bother about that. You won't lose any custom stuff or your maps... Indeed, I decided quite some time ago to uninstall the authoring tools and reinstall them for which I backed up all my materials and custom instances; well, after uninstalling-reinstalling, ALL my custom stuff were right there in the same place... So it only removes its own files, respect the rest into its folders

Come to think of it, I never really bothered reinstalling... Ill be using a different computer for the next month or so. I tested hammer on it and it SEEMS to be working fine.

 It just happened to me again when I was trying to load a map, but even before I could choose any one to load. The strange was that I verified the integrity of the local files and all of them was OK. But the most strange is that, after forcing it to close and reopen it again, it appears the typical warning message that you have when you are into hammer with an open map, it crashes and then it tries to load the autosave file of that map you had open. But I didn't even have time to open it!

The probelm occures also to me. Sometimes when I click the "open" menu point, Hammer freezes. Sometimes, but not always.

I have it too sometimes. Seems like there's nothing you can really do about it except killing and restarting it.

Another thing I noticed: a few weeks ago Hammer seemed particularly prone to crashes for a while, so I set the auto-save interval to the "extreme paranoia" setting. That actually made the crashing even worse. Disabling the autosave seems to result in fewer crashes. (However I would not recommend this to anyone, for obvious reasons.)
Wild speculation: if you are doing something (moving things, changing properties, staring at the monitor) at the exact moment while it's autosaving, it crashes? My autosaves often seem alarmingly up to date after a crash...

I'm still experiencing this problem, and have notified Valve.

Sometimes the 'load File' window remains blank forever, sometimes it's fine and 'Save As' window does the same thing instead. I think I'm being punished for hating the PTI Editor :angrysquare:

What helped for me is randomly opening a map from the most recent 5 I can just open from the file menu (often an instance) and after I loaded that, keep it open and load another map. For some reason that helps evade the stuck on load error.

This works, but does nothing for my 'Save As' window.
I can ONLY do a 'regular' save with the same name as my existing project. I can work around this by manually renaming VMF files, but it's a real pain in the behind

Yeah, this is becoming REALLY annoying! In addition to our paranoid tendencies that make us hit Ctrl+S every 4-5 min. or after every time we introduced an important change in the map, now we also have to hit it before every attempt to load an instance, another map, or saving your map under a different name...

Does anyone know if Valve is trying to fix this at all??

I certainly hope so.

Does anyone have an old version of hammer.exe?

Kay, I just emaild the SDK help. Heres what I said.

Hello.

Me, and many other mappers, are experiencing crashes in hammer quite frequently. Most particularly in Portal 2. From what people are saying, and myself, hammer (but not usually the authoring tools window itself) starts not responding/crashing for the following reasons;
•Trying to Save As
•Opening instances
•Trying to open a vmf
•Trying to run hammer itself
•Choosing a texture
•For me rarely when opening a point file
•And on another note, when I try to play community maps in PeTI, Portal 2 crashes!

I/we honestly don't know what to do and we hope to god you're fixing this.

Also, I think this may or may not be affecting episode 3. Don't you think?

Thank you for your time.

I think I might've screwed it all up on that episode 3 thing. :older:
