Mirror's Edge

It's not exactly a new game, but I just got it on steam and played through it and was amazed. It had some weak spots but they were far outweighed by the rest of it which was awesome.

Now, being the experienced mapper that I am, I immediately google'd around to see if there's any custom maps for mirror's edge. Turns out, there is. I found quite a few, including a portal 2 one. So that's cool. Also, couldn't help but notice that the forum I found all this info on was a 4-years-old, small community, mostly-dead forum. Remind anyone of anything?

Anyway, I was intrigued, so I looked to see how hard it was to get to the editor. It's hard. To use the editor, you have to get the Unreal Editor binaries from another UE3 game (the guide I was following recommended America's Army 3, which is free on steam (but only works for the steam version of mirror's edge).

So after I finally got it working, I spent the next hour or two following the basic tutorials, trying to figure out the editor. Let me tell ya, it's like trying to learn hammer all over again. "HOW DO I MAKE A GODDAMN HOLLOW ROOM" is what I was screaming for around half an hour. Yeah.

So anyway, I eventually got that done and made it through the tutorials for adding props and stuff, so that was cool. I'll keep you guys posted if anything else interesting happens.

Go ahead and use this thread to just generally discuss mirror's edge, or try the editor for yourself and fail along with me

I got Mirror's Edge with PS3 some time ago, but i hate first-person on consoles, so I gave up after a few weeks (I reached a deep construction-site/pit if anyone knows where that is).
But it looks pretty cool so I might check it out for PC

Mapping for Mirror's Edge is doomed to fail as far as I can tell; Beast Lighting is proprietary, so things don't look as good unless you have the in-house mapping software.

I really liked the game, the ending was disappointed, but after all, it's a parkour game, I really love doing the time trials and finding new paths to have a better time.

Are you joking? The ending was one of the best parts, all cinematic and stuff, ohh I got chills inside.

It's probably my favourite game of all time because of the atmosphere, the design and the environment the game takes place in.

There are only two things bad about this game.

  1. Not long enough.
  2. If they ever do make a Mirror's Edge 2, it will probably be Origin exclusive.

All I know about that game is that it's soundtrack contains a song called "Still Alive", which was the first hit on YouTube at one point. :confused2:

Would you recommend getting it?

It is basically the best game ever. There are a bunch of minor problems with it, but its really pretty, it sounds great. And the gameplay, avoiding a few small complaints, is PERFECT. So yeah, its worth it.

The storyline isn't very good, especially not in comparison to what it could be, so you kind of just have to accept the plot holes with good grace. It isn't hard to do, since you're busy flying over rooftops and climbing stuff.

Definitely ranks on my top 10...maybe 15... favorite games of all time. The soundtrack makes me go all fuzzy inside (it's mainly composed by Solar Fields) and the end song is great (and yeah, it's called Still Alive. Apparently it was a thing in 2007-2008 to make end songs in video games called Still Alive). The gameplay is new and interesting and while it does have some weak spots (mostly in the tutorial section), for the most part it keeps you in the flow state most of the game. As for the plot, well, all I can say is that I didn't see any major plot holes and it's pretty decent world-building, so that's cool.

You pretty much summed up my feelings about it as well :smile2: Whenever I make music I'm trying to make the Mirror's Edge soundtrack. It's my favourite game soundtrack of all time, it nails everything. Although that song on the Episode 2 advert is beautiful.
