I've bought a DVD from the steam store called custom props and animation. I'm currently watching it to get me started on making props (and animation =P). I'm wondering if there is any one on these forums who has any experience with making models that I can keep in contact with.

I'm going to buy SOFTIMAGE|XSI and the first thing I'm going to try out is making the new "Aperture Science Enrichment Centre Mobile Vaporisation Device". It will look like a smaller version of the vaporisation device used on the walls. It will bring a new element of game play where the player must use portals while valuing gravitational side of the device more in order to vaporise things such as Func_Physboxes, important equipment and of course, the poor turrets scattered around the various test chambers.

Any advice and tips on getting started on modeling and XSI are welcome. Feed back on the device are welcome as well.

I have some limited experience with 3D Studio Max, enough to know that XSI sucks in comparison.

Care to explain why? I'm not going to do any thing really advanced with XSI, just make models and such.

For exactly that reason, XSI is geared more towards higher-end modelers. It is very easy to get into 3DSM and there are 3.2 billion tutorials online for it.
