Playing self_esteem_fund sound file

I have the self esteem fund sound file, ( the depressing one from the first fling puzzle,) and put it in an ambient generic, but i wont play!! I've also tried putting in Portal.song_4 in for the sound name, (this is what is in the ambient generic in the actual portal map,) but still nothing. Anything I can do short of converting it to a .wav? Oh yea, its a .mp3.


EDIT!!

It only plays if the start silent spawnflag is checked, and it has a valid playsound input!!!!

According to what I read sounds MUST be in wav format to be processed by the game.

Audacity is a free software for sound edition that can convert MP3 to wav, among many other things.

YES, it does have to be in .wav format, and i already have a sound editor/converter. BUT!!!! if you put in Portal.song4, it will play this sound. (because it's using the soundscript file.) But yes, i could extract the sounds and just use my converter. That works to.

Actually, all my maps voices are using ambient_generic, and are mp3. It works fine. All of Hamster Alliances music is mp3 too.

Now if you use something else (env_soundscape, logic_choreograph, etc) then maybe not; I dunno. But for ambient_generic, mp3 is not a problem (and its a LOT smaller)

Yeah I'm pretty sure ambient_generic can play mp3 files... but I don't think you can preview them in hammer

You're perfectly right.
Though I don't know why Hammer can't preview them.
It must be in relation with the LAME license of the MP3 group for their encoder/decoder.

I wouldn't covert music to .wavs, they can become far too large and will easily bypass the size limit for files on this site. Only use .wavs for things such as custom sound effects, explosions, voice etc...

Yep, but if you want to play a looping sound, you will have to use a WAV file. MP3 does not support Cue Points, and thus, does not support looping.

Since when did this change from 'I fixed it!' to 'DO THIS, OR EAT SHIT AND DIE!!!!!' no offense, btw.

But the previewing error is probably why i was getting so pissed. It would have played in game, but not in hammer, correct?

Anyway, thats weird... but, if a mod would kindly close this thread, my problem is fixed, and this seems to want to become a random, ranting raving, throw whatever is in your head onto here thread.
