Update: Turns out it's fake. Most likely. Ah well.

(Blatantly copying from the facepunch post)

Many of you may remember the mysterious concept art from Valve from earlier this year:

An inside source has confirmed that SOB (Valve's new IP) is an unannounced game entitled Stars of Barathrum (working title). Plays like privateer/freelancer but also with the ability to command larger cruisers and capital ships. It's a very vast and open-world game where you choose your own adventure, a lot of internal resources are being put into SOB.

DO WANT

So, will it be using Source or a new engine entirely?

Well, considering every Valve game to date has been on an in-house engine (read: Goldsrc or Source), and their recent foray into non-FPS with Dota 2, I would guess it'll be on Source

I'm excited to see what changes they make to allow for open world though. Maybe we'll finally be rid of loading screens between maps

Edit: re-read your question, hurf. Probably heavily modified source. Might even be the first incarnation of this Source 2 we've heard so little about.

It'd have to be Source 2; the current engine isn't able to do any of the things you'd need to have seamless level transitions or unified open-world levels.

If it's true this would be the most un-Valve like thing they've done ever. I don't want to sound like that guy, but to me it looks like just another title that will be released by Valve before we see HL3, if indeed we ever see it :L

I agree. But I'm also afraid of VALVe mixing an open-world-quest-o-tron to HL3. I liked the franchise because of the physic puzzles, the gun fights, the story, the level design and the characters. I wouldn't need RPG styled stuff or barely useful functions that we often see in new releases.

Anyway this game looks fancy for sure, a new engine might be cool as long as they fix displacements.

Seems to me they've been branching out lately, what with Alien Swarm and Dota 2

Yep, this is just another reason to buy time to work on EP3. Source 2 better be awesome since they are making types of games that are not my cup of tea now. I understand why they are doing non-fps games, but still, don't enjoy RPG/freelancer games as much.

Turns out it wasn't anything really. Just some old unused concept arts from valve artists and someone generating hype. I'll update the OP but leave the thread open.

I still expect a space adventure sometime in the future tho. Unless Valve's artists just likes to draw concepts because they are bored.

Pretty sure that most people that enjoy what they do will do it outside of the context of a vocation if they want, if that's what you're saying.

From what people tell us, Valve seems like a giant mess of ideas and innovation. Possibly, artists could have designed a bunch of stuff, and may not gotten back to it because of other things. They could have ditched it, or it is something they are working on, just not talking about it nor updating the concepts. In that e-mail, the art was labeled "old".

And that puts the nail in the coffin.
