Necrotizing Fasciitis (also known as the "flesh-eating bacteria") is a rare bacterial disease that affects the skin and is caused by the bacteria Group A Streptococcus (or Streptococcus pyogenes) - the same bacteria that causes strep throats. It can also be caused by other types of bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Clostridium perfringens, Bacteroides fragilis and Aeromonas hydrophila. The bacteria enters the body either through minor cuts, insect bites, or abrasions and it is often unknown how the infection began. Once inside, the infection rapidly destroys muscle, skin, and fat tissue. It is often fatal.
