Got a game you want to see on steam? Trying to get your mod out in the open?

Convince us it's good enough here!

What's greenlight?

Steam Greenlight is essentially a tf2 workshop for games: developers post their (indie/mod/lesser-known AAA) game on greenlight, and the community upvotes the games they think should be sold on steam. If a game gets enough votes, it's put on steam.

I personally dislike Greenlight because it means a game has to generate huge amounts of hype to sell. This is exactly the opposite of how I'd want to release a game.

What'd prolly work better is if they had to give a demo to add it to greenlight. Then you could choose if you wanted to buy it because you'd actually have played it, and hype would not be a problem.

This is a great way to get more Sourcemods on Steamworks!

However, Just browsing the first page, I saw games made in RPG Maker so expect a lot of crap also. Also, I wonder Greenlight would get Minecraft on Steam. Perhaps not, but still, I'm surprised that it not on Steam.

If I'm not mistaken, I think the reason Minecraft isn't on Steam is because Notch doesn't want it on Steam.

This is true. why split profits with Steam when you're selling just fine?

If I recall, Mojang decided a while back that a) it would be too difficult to integrate steam into their existing system and b) they wanted to do their own community (friendlists etc) thing (part of the reason to transition to general Mojang accounts)

How much more? Hundreds than usual? Today alone they sold 16,000. That's at the current price of about £15.80.

You don't need to be a wizard to realise today alone, mojang have earned £240,000. At least. That's like winning deal or no deal every single day. Why split it when you're getting ONE MILLION POUNDS every 4 days?!

And growing too!

Still I wish it WAS on Steam. But I understand why it isn't. (Mostly because to do so would really throw an axe into the modding deal)

Um

It would require work on their part, but wouldn't the workshop do WONDERS for modding? Just saying.

It actually wouldn't because of how modding works for anything that's in a .jar. If you want to override a class, you need to put it in the .jar, there's no way around it unless you curve your code for it, and doing that for every Minecraft class is not remotely feasible. So for mods that override the .jar itself (which is ALL mods, as APIs that allow otherwise need themselves to be put into the .jar) they couldn't happen with Steam.

Not to mention it would also limit what features they could alter, to prevent conflicts and breaks with Steam.

All new games (or mods) should release a demo, because actual game-play is better than any trailer or video. That way you get a fair feeling about the game and can decide whether you want to buy it or not. The only downside is that we would maybe buy less games. Which is maybe why we don't see many demos for big games...

^this. So much this.

This is one of the sole reasons to pirate as game, if you intend to buy it, but are unsure.

That's what I did for many Homestuck albums, and for Gmod. And in the end, I bought both!

The only other reason to pirate is if there's no way to buy it anymore. Such as MAME games and emulated games on the PS1, or old generations of consoles.

what about uploading Source mods on Greenlight?

i am interested in uploading my Portal 2 mod on Greenlight, it would reach a wider audience and i could update it on a regular basis

I've seen some source mods on there, but they're total conversion mods from what I can tell.

Who knows though. Might be possible.
