The npc_rocket_turret that knew too much.

I have been working on puzzle for too long and I am now seeking help/ideas.

The Setup (without spoiling the puzzle):
There is a rocket turret at one end of a room and portable wall at the other end of the room.

**The Problem: **
If I place a portal up high on the portable wall and then stand infront of the turret, the turret will sometimes attempt to fire a missile that passes through me AND the portal (ie. it fires on an upward angle, like ahead shot); however, I want the turret to fire directly at the player.

Even if I put a solid wall between the portalable wall and the turret, the turret still "knows" that the portal is there and attempts to make the same shot. I have also tried using the Block LOS tool material.

It will fire at the player properly if the portal isn't up there, but for this puzzle it needs to be there.

Can you help?
Any ideas on how to get the turret to ignore the portal or to focus more on the player would be a lot of help.

Check out the map Facility Advanced (the rocket_turret is very close to the end). He had to have had the same kind of issues, but he solved them in some way; his turret always focussed on me.

Even if he had the same problem, I'm not sure how playing the map will show me the solution.

PLAYING the map wont solve your problem (but it might show whether he has the same problem you are seeing, or not). VMEXing the map might show you the solution, since you could see what flags he used, if there were any mapping constructs required etc. . . IF he appears to not have the problem you are haivng.

Haha, no - but maybe it should be.

Also, anyone have any ideas on this?

Well, if you wont look at this what he did, you can always. . .ASK the mapper of that if he did anything special (instead of hoping he sees this topic and answers)

You (or Chuck Norris) dont have any personal rules against PMs, do you?

No, Chuck Norris doesn't use VMEX to decompile maps.
He stares them down until the map decompiles itself.

So if someone talks about how to decompile the official portal maps, the thread gets closed or edited but if I have a problem, rather than trying to help find me find an answer, the solution is for me to go and decompile all the user made maps in the hopes of maybe finding something similar?

Really?

Not sure who you are talking to, but I for one DID help you to find your answer the best of my ability; I told you where you could possibly go to get your answer without using VMEX; of course, you can go the VMEX route yourself too. Am I only being helpful if I send the PM to him myself? Sorry if everyone else is ignoring you at the moment. . .

And there is nothing wrong with VMEX itself; people use it to learn how to do things ALL THE TIME. Its not VMEXes fault that people CAN abuse it; used properly and with common sense/restraint its quite useful. Answering a basic question like yours is a GREAT example of how it may come in handy. Perfectly legit and official mapping sites will point you to its location. . .its just the policy of THIS site to not tell people how to get it, as per this:

Quote:
the TWP staff won't tolerate posting decompiled maps, legal or not. Decompile all you like, discuss decompilation, and discuss VMEX all you like, just keep any links to decompiled maps or other warez off the forums per the forum rules. Going to add any direct links on where to get vmex at to this list. --msleeper

I'm sorry xitooner if I came across as hostile. I appreciate that you were trying to help me, I was just under the impressing that decompiling peoples maps was very frowned upon.

I may look into doing just that if nobody has any ideas.

EDIT: I took a quick look at the map and it seems he is using the default rocket turrets with no special logic_relays, info_targets etc.

Does anyone know if/how I can parent a an npc_bullseye to the players chest? Can I make it ignore portals?

Not if you a) do it in good faith to learn and not to steal from them and b) keep the decompiled maps off our site.

I'm still trying to get this solved (if it can be) and was wondering if I can change the ai_relationshipe between the turret and the portal itself.

Anyone know if that is possible?

Or is there a way to attack a target to the players chest?

Ok, I am not very experienced, so here is "a suggestion I have no idea if it is possible and/or will work".

I read it was possible to tell an entity to attack another with ai_relationship.
Maybe it is possible to parent an intangible and invisible entity to the player's chest and then tell the turret to attack this intangible entity?

Don't know if it is possible, but the idea crossed my mind.

I'm just not sure how to parent something to the players chest. I can parent a target to a rag dolls chest, but since the player doesn't have a rag doll, I'm kind of stuck.

"!player" should do the trick. Also "!activator" if you activate the parenting via something the player triggers.
