Size: very small! This is a average map where you bunnyhop your way to the finish. It took me a while too make this as this is my first map and i am not that good with hammer, but I know a lot of people have trouble bunnyhopping so here is a good chamber to practice!

EDIT: This map is made by mgrandpa8; I've changed the category, for some reason this map seems to be my upload now, but it isn't

File Name: bhop_1_mgrandpa8.rar

It's obvious that you're new to hammer:
* Your map is fullbright: It has no proper lighting. You can use some standard default instance lights, it makes your map look a lot better!
* Your whole puzzle can be skipped, I recorded my blind playthrough:
9Ez5AB1gddo
* You have a lot of misaligned textures: textures that don't really fit properly.
* Arrival and departure elevators make your map look a lot better.

All in all there are a quite a lot things that are in this thread: community-releases/we-are-now-deleting-playground-fullbright-etc-type-maps-t2716.html

So I decided to move your map to the work in progress section; don't be discouraged. My first map wasn't perfect either and the work in progress section is great to improve your map!

Awwww, for a second I thought this would be the Easter map featuring something bunny-related.

Don't do admin things, you don't know how the system works yet..

It's a strafe training map for improving your bunny hop, skipping the platforms defies the point.
If you don't know what bunny hopping is, watch one of BananasaurasRex's speed runs on YouTube. The guy's a machine...

I'll download and have a go at this after work. From the video it looks like the platforms at the end are too close together though. You should reach 300-350 velocity after a few hops and can cover quite a lot of distance.

If you're looking for ideas to expand this then why not try a faith plate in to hop platforms? Insane amounts of fun to be had there as the amount of distance you can cover is ridiculous... It's something I was thinking about maybe doing myself at some point. xD

I played it and yeah, the platforms are waaay too close together. You just need a little strafe jump to get across these gaps, if you bunny hop you overshoot by about half a mile after the first one. And surely the gaps between the platforms should increase as you gain speed and momentum not get smaller. Also, the server shouldn't disconnect you once you get to the end, if a player wants to practice their bunny hop, they're probably going to want to play for longer than 10 seconds. This needs some work... :S

EDIT:

Alternatively, the chamber can be completed like this...

UnlwjAVNNbA

Which is actually kind of fun, but you end up clearing 2 platforms per jump by the end, lol.

EDIT 2:

A second alternative route that enables me to fall about 6 inches short of clearing the whole thing in 3 jumps...

ZzaMz804Xh4

With a bit of time and patience it could probably be done, but I don't have either right now. xD

Anyway, take what I said into consideration and I'll be more than happy to test out your second attempt. Maybe include some flinging-to-bhop next time too as that's actually hella-fun.

hard to do even after I see the runs..I can manage some strafing sideways but hope I don't see this in a map ---> noclip time....
This reminds me of the Portal 1 training maps for flings, peeping and sideways portal ninja jumps etc....nice to see to take advantage of the Portal code quirks, but not really necessary for an excellent map....?

I don't think those routes were intended by the creator, I was just demonstrating a couple of ways that the map can still be used for bunnyhop training as it's kinda broken. I think he may have actually placed the platforms backwards, it's hard to tell with his lack of input in this thread, lol.

And yeah, bunnyhopping in P2 is basically identical to strafing in Quake. It's used alongside wallstrafing in speed runs and the like to pretty much elimate the need for slow walking, or even skip parts of a chamber, so maps like this are good for people who want to improve their times or even just get started with bunnyhopping.

On a side note... I attempted the second alternate route again and failed... Again. I've come to the conclusion that it's impossible and if anyone can clear it in three jumps I'll bake them a cake myself.

well I think this is how a tutorial map isn't supposed to be.

This is "Well, we have those beams, try to get to the other side". If you don't know about bunny hopping or strafing there is no way you will ever find it out by playing this map. I think it needs text or something to show how it is supposed to be done.

For people who can bunnyhop this is easy. For people who can't bunny hop it's impossible (the intended way) so I think this isn't a good tutorial. Try to find a way to make it obvious to players who are new to the concept that it is possible to do.

The intended route is impossoble regardless of whether you can bunnyhop or not. The only way I was able to complete it without flinging was to individually strafe jump between each platform. Like I said, I think he placed the platforms backwards so you can't just bunnyhop across. I think he meant for it to begin with the narrow, close together, beams and end with the wider, further spaced, beams. xD

And you can't really explain to someone how to bunnyhop with a couple of lines of text, they'd need to watch a tutorial video on YouTube or atleast have someone show/explain it to them first. Training maps are for practice afterwards.

It's fun if you want to fling and hop for a couple of minutes, but yeah... The whole thing needs to be redone for it to of any real use. That being said, I'd love to play a well made version of this idea.

I know this topic is old but I want my cake. Also I'm not trying to be a jerk but bhop in portal 2 is not "basically identical" to strafe jumping in Quake. The jumping you do in your video is not giving you any extra speed at all (proof in video) and that is not how you bhop. I have over 1000 hours in p2 and more in Quake.

As for this map...it may have faults but the intended route/solution is by no means impossible. It can be done in multiple ways and at multiple speeds. I agree it's a bit odd the gaps get smaller but they are still lined up just fine for bhopping at slow medium or high speeds.
