You don't have to care much for eye candy as long as it's not fullbright. =)
Sounds pretty cool I will check em' out.
Okay I just finished CC and I have many thoughts to share.
First off...For the long metal hallway I suggest you make a door there because right away I skipped the whole system you had setup with the buttons.
As for the eye candy, I actually have to say that the metal walls had too much detail. Just my opinion though. I felt confused when looking at them sometimes. Sorry >_< You obviously spent a crap load of time on them.
Everything else was great! Ice, lighting, theroy. It was all great, but, I could ninja the whole level.
As for the Pakrat chamber...I didn't even complete that because I tried it twice and the door that leads out of the liquid chamber got flipped every time. When it was supposed to open it was closed...
Then I actually managed to fully trap myself in that room by emancipating the cube I put on the 2nd button. =/
It's too bad you didn't make the contest with Cold Conundrum. I really liked the way you used the Ice Mechanic. I never felt too confused with it so you introduced it fairly well. The turrets felt kinda out of place and were proably not needed. Another thing is that you should have gave an indication that some of the doors opened automatically, I spent a lot of time searching for a way to open the door. Besides those small nitpicks the map was a lot fun and you spent much time to detail. Good job!
Well, since I map with indicator lights, I would assume the player would realize the door auto-opens since there's no lights going to it. I really don't know how to indicate it, a sign would seem a bit wierd.
How did you bypass the puzzle? Pretty sure I fixed that, there's a door in the way.
If you mean the long metal hall that connects to the chamber with 2 Ice Doors then that is no bug, you can try to do that first, though you don't succeed without the box from the other half.
Oh, it took me nearly 1,5 hour to complete these maps and I had much fun. Thank you very much for making them!
The puzzles were the right difficulty, eye-candy was good and I loved the BTS areas.
However, I have discovered a little bug (see the screenshot). For future reference, you can avoid this by filling the little space between the floor and the wall with an INVISIBLE-textured brush (see the example map if you don't know what I am talking about).
Keep it up, looking forward to more maps!
I don't really know what's it's called, portal bumping maybe? I dunno I just completed the puzzle by shooting and backing into my portals instead of actually creating a path for the energy ball.
Whysopro?:
Well in that case you used what would be considered "advanced" techniques. Most people cannot do portal tunneling (what that is) so it isn't a bug so much as you used a different method to beat the puzzle. How you got the energy ball without a box though, puzzles me, as the first one absolutely requires it without cheating. The second one cannot be put in the ball catcher without activating the Ice Door, which requires not one but TWO boxes for the box-only buttons.
Mek:
That's a good idea, never though of that before. thanks, I'll be sure to add it in future maps!
GLaD you had fun with the maps. Also, since people say Portal is about 4 hours long...does that mean these two maps = 1/4th of portal in terms of time?! (in your case) O.O
EDIT: If it isn't too much trouble, do you guys mind making me demos of your playthroughs? I like watching other beat my puzzles, they sometimes do it in ways I didn't expect.
Sure I will get workin' on one. BTW I also found a small, but funny hitch with your button systems.
When a player stands on it, it seems that your other trigger (for boxes only) does not get disabled. This means heehee that when you walk off the button with a box on it, the button springs up and the box hops into the air! =D
BOING!
EDIT: With me being the perfectionist I am...this is going to take a while to get it just right. But I can tell you now that I can beat it in 1:30s.

Well, not for me. I am not one of those who hurry to finish a game. I took much more hours to finish Portal since I was trying some things and looking at eye-candy
Finally got around to making that speed run. Here we go!

Well I did it in 15 seconds so hah!
I actually did do it in 15 seconds, but that was using a glitch in the map that I think is fixed now, my actual time is 1:24 and I will improve that to beat your time soon.
I have to say, I can't believe my first attempt at the energy ball room was to solve it like I did in the speedrun. The size of the trigger field is like that in a TON of maps out there.
Just a heads up to everyone.

In my newer verson of my energy ball catcher prefab I fixed it. The reason it was so large was connected to a func_tracktrain that blocked the energy ball. Took me awhile to realise THAT was what was colliding with the ball.
Also, did you find any of the secret areas in said runs? Speedrunners tend to miss them...
I first played Packrat and found this thread which was for both maps. So I went back to Portal and played Cold Conundrum as well before making any comments. Both maps were great. I had a lot of fun playing them. They weren't too hard. And they weren't one of those maps which make you go crazy with flinging and jumping and such uninventive stuff
Yeah, I had to invent the word "uninventive" as my English is not very good.
But I had a little confusion. You talk about ice floors and ice doors. I did see them in the map but I failed to see any difference they make from normal floors and normal doors. I played the map just like I play any other map without ice floors or ice doors. Can you give me a little hint or something?
Keep up the good work man.
By the way, what does BTS mean guys?
BTS means "behind the scenes". It refers to the darker halls surrounding the test chambers, where the second part of Portal takes place (after chamber 19.)

Ice Floors have a very slippery qulaity to them; try running then stopping on it, or putting a turret on it. They slide 'n slide.
Ice Doors are different in that they switch from a portalalbe surface (frozen) to an unportalable surface.(unfrozen) In Portal you could only have one or the other, and needed pistons to change it. (like the flipping walls in Cold Conundrum) Also, while unfrozen the player can go through them, unlike the pistons.

Running? I have been playing Portal for 4 years and I don't know how to run; if you mean something faster than normal walking. How is it done? Thanks.
No he still means normal movement. No such thing as running in portal.
However hopping repeatedly does increase your speed but I think everyone knows that.

Yeah, sorry. Forgot in Portal you can't run, though I call it sprinting. I meant walking.
Really next dimension stuff, primarily devious puzzles in a perfect package. Now in hindsight, with P2 out, I start noticing how more variety (mechanics, themes) could have made P1 maps more... colourful. But it's good nonetheless, basically a distilled version of the same core mechanics.
Hello all,
How do you install Packrat and Cold Conundrum? I've downloaded Groxfiles.zip but see no guidance on how to install. Thanks for any assistance.

You install this just as all the other portal 1 maps:
Download the zip,
unzip it.
browse to steam/steamapps/~username~/portal/portal
copy the files inside the maps folder to
portal/portal/maps
and the files inside the scripts folder to
portal/portal/scripts
(if that folder doesn't exist, create it)
that should do it

Packrat is my first ever map. As a result, quality is not at it's highest, mostly with shadows.
Cold Conundrum involves 2 new puzzle elements: Ice Doors and Ice Floors. I invented Ice Doors; a friend by the name of Ark11 had the idea for Ice Floors. This map is newer and as a result has better quality of both puzzles and eye candy.
