Just did another run through and took some quick notes while playing:
- The entry elevator is floating slightly above the elevator base.
There are no light strips in the elevator room walls.
There are black shadows around both elevators, this can be fixed by compiling with the parameter -StaticPropPolys under the $light_exe command. (I had the same problem with my map)
Your observation rooms lights are overly (read: blindingly) bright - do you have an env_tonemap_controller and a shadow_control?
The lift that takes you up the 1st half of the portal gun doesn't make any sound.
On that same lift, if you jump while standing on it, it starts going back down while you are in the air - you should probably make the trigger taller.
At the first double-fan fling, there is a piece of protruding wall that the player can easily get stuck on when flinging across the gap by the 2nd fan.
In the final room, you can run and jump across the top of the toxic goo, bypassing the need to fling.
<msleeper> i managed to get totally stuck in your map
<Duffers> oh?
<Duffers> I'm interested to hear this
<msleeper>
i didn't use the rocket turret to get the upgraded portal gun,
so i used that button orange portal that is in the corner of the main room
<msleeper> hopped through it as soon as it opened
<msleeper> shot the blue portal on the wall in the hallway leading up the the fan area
<msleeper> jump BACK through the orange portal before it auto-closed
<msleeper> and got suck :3
<msleeper> stuck
<Duffers> well you're an idiot in that case.
<msleeper> haha
<msleeper> i was thinking with portals man!
<Duffers> moar liek thinking with hurrrr
I'm sorry, if those are the best screens you can take, I'm not interested. It seems like you're basing most of the puzzles in small rooms that only feature one or two tasks.
Also, what's up with the name? I'm not seeing any rainbows.

Never said you had to play it.
I'd also like to know what's up with the name. I see neither rainbows or a palace...
Anyway, great map. Some interesting new concepts, very few problems, perfect difficulty and length, and good use of music. Enjoy your $50!

Wasn't that how the test chambers in Portal were? Also, if you are not interested in a contest winning map, what on earth would interest you?Anyway, great job Duffedwaffe. Only thing I came across was something that's already been mentioned.

So, you don't want my input? Or my suggestions? After playing the map, a few of the puzzles seemed like theyrequired more skill than I had, or at least more ingenuity. Such puzzles were the first one you get the box in, as well as the first room with the fans. For the box, I eventually just said Screw it and raepd the box from the ledge with my gravity gun. I noclipped through the first room with the fans, also.I did like the
turret ambush, though. However sadly, it seemed like they either killed you or they didnt. There werent any close calls.
I also don't like using the vertical fling you keep trying to teach in your maps. I'd rather use it as a way to play maps differently rather than have it be the only way to proceed. :/
There are a lot of opportunities for a narrow escape from the turrets. for example, if you grab the gun and run-hop to the right and forward towards the entrance to the next area. one thing i like is how you can utilize the turret cage supports for cover.
It's not flamebaiting, but yeah, I got you.
Am I doing this puzzle right?

I tried to fling dozens of times and couldn't ever make it, but this worked on the first try.
This isn't really a comment about this map per se, but I enjoyed Snakepit a lot more than Rainbow Palace. Not to say I didn't enjoy Rainbow Palace, I just thought Snakepit was a lot more entertaining.

Well for the most part yes. The idea of that puzzle was to
confuse the player so they wouldnt notice the intended solution at first. The intended solution was to simply jump up the fan to the ledge.
i don't know if thats how you're SUPPOSED to do it. but its how i solved it too. and the ONLY way i could get it to work. actually i solved it this way pretty early, then jumped down and tried to find a different way, cuz, as a general rule i try to find the right way to solve puzzles... but (your way) the way i solved it, was the only one i could find, Duffy, if this is wrong. please show us the right way?edit: damn you duf, you posted before me lol

(POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD, MAYBE...NOT REALLY THOUGH)
Great map! Very nice and clean, with simple (but fun and thought-evoking) solutions. The fan jump solution felt kind of bad (though I get you were trying to mislead the player). Overall I liked the fan part the most. But some times in the map, I felt a bit claustrophobic. Like the first puzzle you do (without any portal gun) was kind of small, but maybe that's just me. Awesome job dude!
Hi! first time poster, long time lurker.
First up, fantastic map, just the right balance of puzzles and progress, really enjoyed it.
However, I'm so sure I didn't solve the last puzzle the way it was intended.
I put an orange portal on the wall then portalled back into the main room, climbed up where you got the first part of the portal gun, made a blue portal on the floor and jumped.... I got about 3/4 of the way across the goo pit and just swam the rest of the way. I took damage but didn't die, and finished the level.
Obviously, I'm retarded, and couldn't work out how to do it properly, what was the intended solution?

well actually you basically did it the right way except that if you put you jump down from in the
room with the rocket turret, or up from one of them walls and replace the same portal color onto the ground youll get more speed and wont hit the goo at all
so you basically did it the right way. just could found a higher place to get more speed.

Oh, really? That's funny because I actually solved that part by using portals.
I stood facing the floor fan so the exit was above and behind me. I then shot one portal on the vertical panel and the other on the ceiling a little beyond straight up from the fan so that I could do an inverse-angled-fling or whatever you want to call it.
I only pulled that off after a few tries though.

Great map! i actually flew through it, the only thing that actually took some thinking for me was the first part where you try to get the box out of the whatjamagigit cage thing.
the fans were really fun, and it seems they were set up to be more confusing than they actually are. i loved the turret ambush, i was surprised i didn't die on it.
i did die however on the last jump across the goo once, due to faulty portal placements... i was all like
" title="Sigh" /> but then i did it again and i was all like
" title="Get The Fuck Out" /> so life was good. The look and feel of it was all good, except for the combine wall thing for the first part. i feel that could have been replaced with one of those gate things made by aperture. thanks for the awesome map
I really really liked the map. The new mechanics were skillfully done and seemed to fit with the whole style of the original game.
All that being said, here are the two things that I would suggest:
1 -- I believe it was mentioned before:
the 2nd (3rd?) fan fling has a ledge at the ceiling that is fairly easy to get caught on.
2--
The turret ambush is a really neat idea, but is sort of a "gotcha" moment. It will kill most people the first time, but not after that once they expect it. I know some of portal is like this, but if there was a safe area that was fairly logical (read: directly after the ledge you jump down) that allowed you to get the portal but still somehow made it difficult to get out of the ambush, but you could survey the area it might be more forgiving, even if there were more turrets.
Overall though, it was a very fun map and I look forward to more from you!
I know it wasnt the intended solution, but i managed to get the fan puzzle with what i'm guessig was the 'portal solution' on like my third try. But on my first i ended up landing on the area above the portalalbe wall and just jumped down, but the next time i got stuck up there, started firing portals to try to get out, and portalled myself out of the map. (but i just went in the way i got out)
A fairly good map, with a lot of cleverness, especially the
Turret ambush and nearly-impossible timed fling.
.

Please proceed to the chamberlock. Mind the thread-bump.
this was a very nice map, however i noticed one bug
shortly after you get the first portal gun, and fire a blue portal and push the button in the hub room to make an orange portal, it sometimes sends me back to the orange autoportal in the room with the cube.
I tried to get that to happen, but I can't do it. The map seems to work flawlessly for me.

Played this, took me about 30 minutes, very clever map, I think i was lucky with the infinity loop, got it on my 1st go !!!!
I like the use of the fans, that was different. I think others may find this one easy as I am usually useless !
Thanks for a good map
Aye this map was nifty, it was a good break as it really wasn't particularly hard, just had some good ideas in it. The box fling was rather annoying, but nothing horrible.
Duff, campincarl managed to get on top of the cube dispenser at the first puzzle. wat do?
