Description
S_O_v1 is more fun than brussels sprouts! Star Oasis V1 map by Mangus Toyl A medium challenge map. Objective: Get to third tier. Must place the excursion funnel on a tile and a cube within the excursion funnel. The cube will pass upward until it hits a button. Some cubes need to be stacked. Companion cube needs to be placed in a specifc spot and deliberately respawned. Most cubes are used as a stepping device. In most cases, don't let cubes hit fizzler or it's game over. Special note: faith plates can be approached from two different angles - either by walking onto it from a backwards direction or a forwards one. This means that only one method will work correctly, so choose to walk onto a faith plate from the forward direction, as the fulcrum's leverage changes from one point to another. Always save right before making a big decision. There is only one shot at stringing together the correct sequence of moves, so you may need to save before making that 'leap of faith.' When you first approach this map, follow each indicator light and map out its corresponding trigger and symbol. Warning: I use normally open and normally closed buttons throughout. When you use a faith plate or fall from a light bridge into a portal, do not use directional keys to guide a path as this is done automatically using targets. Please read the directions on how to extract this file properly. I have special files that have to be in place. And finally, save before jumping into excursion funnel. TO USE THIS MAP FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS BELOW Extract the .bsp file to your maps directory located in steam/steamapps/common/portal 2/portal2/maps. Extract the star_oasis folder to the materials folder located in steam/steamapps/common/portal 2/portal2/materials. Once in portal 2, go to your console by pressing the ~ key (enable it under keyboard options if you haven't) and type "map star_oasis_v1" without quotes. No respawn. Normal cubes will not respawn if lost; no box dropper for normal cubes. Save at various points. Indicator lights are a jumbled mess...sorry. When you arrive at the star oasis, you will notice only one star has a corresponding button. The other two stars open on a proximity trigger so don't waste time looking for two other buttons. ok have 4 cubes.. discouragement field in ctr of first room are off, light bridge is on.. Lost.. Hint?
You could have just updated Star_Oasis by Mangus Toyl (.zip)
It looks neater, but there's still stuff to fix: plenty of square wall tiles cut in half; the cubeplate room could use a dropper to avoid getting stuck; the stars room isn't really a good sight; maybe order the zip contents in \maps and \materials because people might just unzip everything into \maps (and the custom thing wouldn't show); mappers here don't like levels encased in huge boxes.
I'm about ready to give up on this map. This is the first map that I ever had to go look at a video to figure out, and the most recent video on your channel doesn't help, perhaps because the map has changed since you made it.
I cannot execute the fling at 5:08 in your solution video. I barely make it back to the platform I started from. And I haven't figured out any other way to get to that platform next to the lightbridge. Am I missing something?
[Edit] Yes, I was walking backward onto the faith plate. I didn't know that you got a different kick from the pivot than the lever end, but apparently you do. I haven't missed that fling since. You new video was more helpful; too bad I needed it so much.[/Edit]
This map has some interesting new (to me) gimmicks like the alternating laser grids. I'd like to be able to get through it all.

However, I've lost patience. There are too many places where you can get stuck and have to start over. To wit:
1. If you miss the funnel fling in any way (and I've found many ways), I can't find another way to repeat it. If you moved the platform with the inverted button out of the way after hitting it with a cube, you could execute the fling from the lightbridge.
2. I died on the laser grills. You really need an autosave point once you enter that room.
This map is too confusing and too frustrating for me. It is the first map I haven't finished before rating it. A 3/5 from me.

I finally got through the map. I am certain I would never have figured it out on my own, because there are so many things you can't see until you've tried and failed at the map at least a few times (e.g. the final angled fling surface can't be seen from anywhere but the funnel, and then only for a moment.)
Suggestions:
1. Get rid of fizzler in funnel room. Unnecessary complication.
2. Make funnel fling retryable (eliminate blocking lightbridge in funnel room, maybe?)
3. Autosave points
4. Figure out the signage. Even knowing the solution, I can't for the life of me figure out what any of the signs have to do with finding it.
5. Minor suggestion (won't make level more playable, just less time consuming): Make rooms smaller. There's an awful lot of running back and forth, it would help if each trip were shorter.
6. Put funnel room at 90 degrees to fling room, with viewport in same corner but opposite wall. This will cut out a lot of running.
I do like many of the elements in your map. It's finding them and connecting them that makes it no fun to play.
Don't give up. You're a devious bastard, with a lot of twisted ideas. Not a bad place to start in map making!
