Perhaps the portal edge has somekind of nuclear repulsion that repells everything regardless of its charge. This might explain the strange fire like effect seen at the edges

Or it's just there to look cool

If you were to place an object (for example, the beloved companion cube) inside a portal, then move one of the portals, would that cause the object to be sliced in half, because now each half is at different point in space?

yes but glados said some how... the portals are totally safetys no? come on, you dont die and the objects cant slice in half.

Indeed, portals as we know them will 'push' anything inside them out when they close/move thus preventing the slicing you speak of, I actually think this is what would happen IRL, it happens in game because players were unsure of the safety of portals so valve made them totaly safe for you to stand in.

wait, strike that I now think they would get sliced in half. if you imagine a portal like a worm hole that is say 1 meter long then anything placed in the portal would have the very middle section stretched by 1 meter whilst the rest would be in a normal shape and size, if you then imagine the portal closing as the middle of the wormhole 'pinching' together the middle of the object would becrunched together and then returned to its normal size, whilst the other half on the opposite side of the closing wormhole would do the same. and you would end up with two half objects.

I think that with the way the portal opens (if you look closely at the wall texture when you open it you can see it stretches everything out from the middle) as it closes it would force the edge of the object in question in towards the middle of its cross section (it would only push the bit that is actually in the portal) so it would seal it much like a sausage skin, so if you were to lie down in a portal whilst it closed rather than you being sliced in half guilotine style and having your innerds fall out all over the place the tiny ring of skin directly next to the seperated area would stretch over the hole and seal it, so it would look much like a healed amputation.

anyone elses thoughts?

The wall must be some sort of meaningful part of the portal, given that they can only exist on walls. If it simply substituted its own molecules, etc, for what was already there, why not substitute the portal for air instead of the portal for a wall?

I think you will find that the molecules in a solid generally stay still.
Whilst molecules in a gas are just a little less content in one place.
I believe you have an answer

Exactly my point. Somehow, the molecules of the wall are involved. Not simply shoved aside.

Well obviously you get a black hole, or the resulting factor can be explain in this instructional video.

Are you joking?! I just spent over an hour reading through all 16 pages and I come to see that at the end that Crooked Paul isn't posting anymore, and people are allowed to continue their crazy ramblings without being corrected??

There are a number of replies I could make to a number of different posts in this thread, but I've got to go to sleep soon, and I don't remember them all.

For one, I think I can answer the "portal in itself" question, provided that the portals are the same size, it's simple: The object with the portal on it wouldn't fit. Yes, the portal would fit if you turned it sideways, but the moment it begins to enter the portal, it would begin to jut out of itself, and make it too wide for the portal. I'll try to illustrate:

Further, people seem to have it in their head that there can only be one set of portals per map. I can't believe all you portal mapping lot haven't piped up with the LinkageGroupID: http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Prop_portal
(Scroll down to LinkageGroupID under keyvalues)

Do you understand me?When you make sometihng like this

What happens when i grab it,and rotate it.

As for this, at first I thought you meant rotate as in twist, which wouldn't be a problem. But as for rotating that thing, well, you couldn't. Because first of all, it can't exist. It needs a beginning and an end, and if it so happened that it was the exact height between the portals, then it would have to be perfectly straight up and down, and when it was, you couldn't rotate it. You can imagine it this way:

if you place two portals very close to themselves (place between them smaller than 2 cm) And you will kick into one portal?I know but what happens if you will for very strange reason you will get inside them...you will be inside yourself and i think...it will hurt.

what would happend in the actual game if you placed a portal (somehow) on yourself and walked though the other one? omg game crash or something i have no idea. it would be funny to test this in realy life ... on an animal throwing it though a portal while having a portal on its chest xD

Portal has no concept of portals intersecting. If you place two portal props in the same spot, they just intersect the way placing any two normal quads would - nothing interesting happens.

Has anyone mentioned that portals wouldn't be possible in real life because they can create gravitational potential energy out of nothing, defying conservation of energy?

For example the portal in the ceiling and portal in the floor trick. You would be able to keep falling without actually gaining any potential in the first place.

On the second page, I addressed an essay by Niven about approaching this empirically. I agree with his conclusion that, barring direct conversion of matter to energy (e = mc^2), the energy would have to come from thermal energy. Essentially, as something gained more kinetic energy, it would lose its thermal energy, becoming very very cold and very very fast.

I wouldn't be so quick to rule something "impossible".

I guess I always assumed that real portals would require huge amounts constant power, more than what could be reproduced with using gravity and perpetual motion.

This is unintelligible. Perpetual motion is a crock, and gravity is a bank: you put energy in and you get energy out. (Except where noted above where you can wire transfer in energy from thermal energy, so to speak.)
