EDIT: I smell a new page. And just to bring up what i said before:

[2] where does the half-life 2 turrets get their ammo from?

[1] GLaDOS runs the whole system and buys resources if needed.

[2] No idea.

Shot in the dark: automated underground mining facility.

I dunno, they're the Combine. They can do whatever they want.

I think there's a collaboration between Aperture Science and the Combine. Not only they both have similar turrets, but also they have similar energy balls.

Hmm.. Maybe the combine made the turret first? (and energy balls), and GLaDOS managed to steal some of these things?

Then the portals did exist in Combine turrets, and Aperture Science invented the portals independently. Failure.
EDIT: In Portal: Prelude, before GLaDOS, energy balls and turrets still existed. Another failure.

Perhaps the Combine was a double agent, giving both companies some of the other's inventions.
I'm on a roll, considering I haven't actually played HL2...

I guess the whole Science lab is self sufficient. Its probably built on a giant underground mine containing all the raw materials they need to operate. With GlaDos controlled miner robot that relentlessly extract ressources to build cubes, ammo, turrets, chamber walls, etc and to pump water to create the green goo and to fill the toilets.

Talking of toilets, they must have portals in them too. Look at the one in the awakening chamber. You can flush it and it works... but underneath there's nothing. No drain, no water supply... Must have a raw sewage portal operated shit dispenser somewhere in the facility.

Good point..although the Combine struck up a deal with Dr. Breen...didn't he work at Black Mesa?

He was the administrator at black mesa.

Then how the Combine failed? In Half-Life: Opposing Force, Adrian Shephard got a not working Black Mesa Handheld Portal Device (namely Displacer).

So maybe the combine turrets can have portals in them?

EDIT:

Yes, but are these Aperture Science portals or the Combine portals?

Did the Combine create their own portals? Or did they take them from Black Mesa? Or the other way around? Or did they take them from AS?

NEW PAGE! Allright!

The thing is, maybe after Aperture Science built GLaDOS, the three collaborated and finished the same "Portal" project. But, again, the portals couldn't be used in turrets.

Even with the Combine as a (if rather forceful) moderator, AS collaborating with BM? I find that a tad hard to believe.

Aperture science makes their own portals, uses them in tests, turrests, and toilets.

Black mesa attempts to create portals but (i've never played opposing force but if the displacer couldnt make portals, yeah) fails.

Breen makes a deal twith the combine.

The combine fixes the portals that black mesa developed, allowing them to make turrets too. (and maybe toilets ;D).

But what about the energy balls?
