Tie the users TWP accout with their steam account then to prevent voting themselves.

Implying that people do not have multiple steam/TWP account and that they are hard to make?

Blocking wont work, all you need to do is trade vote for vote for other maps.

I think if msleeper or whoever chooses say the top 10 of the week and then create a poll that only people with a couple of posts can vote on. That'll stop the spammers.

The point of this thread is to get an automated/user-powered way to get that list of top ten.

Anyway, I say we try to build a "Recommend for Spotlight" button into the phpBB Download mod and then have staff/Community Contributors go through the suggestions list and choose.

Of course, not knowing much about PHP at the moment this is probably a lot harder than I think it is.

How is "Recommend for Spotlight" different from a rating of 5?

If your going to automate throught the button you might as well just coding in the PHP that it chooses the higest rated/most downloaded map of the week and makes it spotlight.

Semi-automated. I would never put a fully automatic system into place for something like this.

I think a problem with this though is that more people are likely to play maps made by known members than a less known one. Basically saying, (and this may apply no matter what system we choose,) a well known member will probably get more downloads, and higher ratings than someone who is less well known. I've seen lots of new people get completely bashed with their idea or concept, and then have an older member do the same thing and get complimented at it by the same person that bashed the first. I think we need to come up with a solution that most people will appreciate. No one should get left in the dark, or pushed aside if they are a new member.

I think that it's good that the system will be semi automated, so that this hopefully won't happen. (I do NOT trust computers to do a good job of this. They don't have any feelings whatsoever.)

Just some of my thoughts. Feel free to totally disagree with me!

I think that is just life in general you're complaining about not TWP. Look at YouTube. The front page always has the same people on there. Smaller or less know people probably will never be on there. And I am not complaining. Well know people are well known because of the effort and dedication they put into their work to get a finely polished end result. I personally don't believe though that people vote on names, it's not even in the download list. If you release consistently good content regularly, you will soon become more 'know' in the community and your maps will be treated as such. Take apple for example, they make and release the same electrical crap as everyone else, but they do it to such a high consistent quality that they have become insanely popular. Honestly I only think you are complaining because your are jealous of some of the mappers on here.

I basically just saying that I'm glad it's semi automated. I wasn't directly pointing to TWP, I probably should have made that more clear.I guess I typed way more than I needed too to the point where it sounded totally different than what I meant to say. Also, why would I be jealous of other mappers? Who really cares if they're better than me? At least I tried. You learn from your mistakes. I did a horrible time managing my time on eco_leaf. Actually, one of the rooms are recycled from a earlier map I started. I ended up abandoning it, but I used a chamber from it so that I could save time. I wasn't complaining, I was just trying to point some things out that may effect the system, (even if they may seem unnecessary.)

And actually, reading people rage on youtube is kinda fun... lol

Edit: Bascily saying, msleeper ninja'd me by ten minutes.

Ok. That response had little to nothing to do with mine. So I am probably not going to respond to you anymore.

Admin, you might want to talk to the people who play every custom map out there (djinndrache, coopcrowd, xdiesp etc.) and ask their opinion on who deserves to have the spotlight. Or even have their votes preferred over normal voters if you are going to have a 'spotlight suggestion' button.

If you do ask the people who have played every map then they surely would know who is more deserving of the spotlight.
If they do play every map then surely they will get around to playing the brilliant 'little persons' maps.

Besides the whole spotlight system i also think every map should be given 2 scores.

A average score from the users and a score by the "critics" (admins, mods, contributors...basicly some people that are really dedicated to the community & mapping and are very active/playing alot(not me ))

I hate to make the comparisson AGAIN... but kinda like l4dmaps.com has.

Whenever i download a map i always weigh in both options... but maybe thats just me?

Would both the scores from the users and admins/mods/contributors affect the final result? Because I think that could work.

For example,

User Score + Admin Score = Spotlight Map
OR
User Score + Admin Score = Don't Spotlight Map

The admins/mods/contributors could use the rating system already used for maps as the "User Score" and when the admins/mods/contributors have time to play the map, they could rate their opinion, 1-5, and if the total points are 8, 9, or 10, then the map should be in the Spotlight.

Another example,

5(user) + 4(admin) = 9 (Spotlight map)
5(user) + 2(admin) = 7 (Don't Spotlight)
