Welcome to the new Thinking With Portals
Posted by msleeper • Dec 20, 2019
We've been hard at work the past few weeks migrating the website to a fresh new platform. We've moved away from the old phpBB forum and onto a new Wordpress powered site and forum.

There has been a few major changes that I'll go over quickly here, and in more detail below.

  • We've integrated Discord logins, so that you do not need to register with the site to comment. You can securely login using your Discord credentials and it will automatically link your account.
  • Speaking of account linking, you can also link your Steam account. There will be some functionality regarding this in the future, but for now it gives you another method to access the forums!
  • The download database has been preserved, although right now it's in rough shape. All of the files are there but it needs some work. More about this below.
  • The website now has a blog component for our news page. Previously the front page of Thinking With Portals was reserved for announcements from site staff. Now we have made it so that Community Contributors can post here as well. Hopefully this means the site will see a lot more activity in the future!

There is almost certainly going to be some weirdness that crops up. Please report any and all bugs that you find here!

Call to action: Looking for writers, authors, and more
Posted by msleeper • Dec 17, 2019
Thinking With Portals is looking for old and new Community Contributors who are interested in helping put together written tutorials, Portal community news, and in-depth high-concept level design (Portal specific, or Source in general) articles.

This content would be for both Thinking With Portals, and for the Source design blog Nodraw.net that we have recently partnered with.

We are also looking for members who are interested in Source 2 / Hammer 2 for the release of Half-Life: Alyx when the time comes. That is obviously more focused on future stuff, but we're trying to lay the groundwork for some great things going forward.

If you are at all interested in getting involved in the community in this way, please join our Discord server where we are planning and coordinating our new content. Thank you!

Text Version & Extra Info
||"TOWERING"
The theme for this competition is "towering".
You may interpret this however you'd like, whether it be visuals-
focused, puzzle-focused, or some combination thereof. It doesn't
even have to be set in Aperture if you want! However, your map
should plainly communicate some aspect of the theme.

Rules/FAQ**
Can others help in making the map/puzzle?**
No. The map should be made by you and you alone. That said, others can help by making other assets like models, sounds, textures, etc.

Can my map be co-op?
Yep! Just keep in mind that it may require more work.

Can my map use custom assets?
Sure! Assets should be packed into the BSP. If you exceed the 100MB Workshop limit or need to include unpackable files like soundscripts/particle systems, include custom assets in a .zip file in the description.

Does the map have to be original/new?
Yes. The map should be made specifically for the competition. You may use instances or prefabs from other maps, but it should otherwise be original.

Can I use PTI/puzzlemaker?
For this competition, yes! Keep in mind that if you choose to use puzzlemaker, it may be judged more critically in the "visuals" section, and your originality score will have to come purely from your puzzle!

If you have any questions regarding the theme/rules, ask!

Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 scorers:
- 1st place, $50 Steam gift card
- 2nd place, $25 Steam gift card
- 3rd place, $10 Steam gift card

SUBMISSIONS ARE DUE DECEMBER 30, 2019 - Good luck!||

Submit your map here. If you'd like to ask questions or talk about the competition with others, join the TWP Discord!

Good luck and have fun!
