A little compiling trouble

So I'm getting started with map design. I've already got plenty of pen and paper designs and have tried my hand at some basic Hl2 maps, and now I want to start making portal maps. I'm having a bit of trouble testing my maps however. When I press the test map button, the compiler prompt thing comes up, I press okay, yatta yatta. Everything works fine, until portal is opened up. Instead of taking me to my map, it takes me to the menu screen. I've tried compiling my map and running it manually in portal, but no luck there either. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Why can't I do a quick map test? It works fine in Hl2, what's going wrong here?

I actualy never got that to work. Check the box in the compile screen that says "do not run" then go to the directory listed in the last line of the compile screen. Copy the .bsp with the name you gave it from wherever to C:\program files\steam\steamapps\@username@\portal\portal\maps.

Then just start Portal, and hit ~ and type "map @map-name@".
