how do you even start with hammer? i want to desperately start and i go here every day for around half a year, and i haven't learned anything except for 1. you can earn a post of the day by being a n00b (sry!); and 2: this is for advanced mapping. i've had to settle with the in game editor and its not that user-friendly. also, the flash version mappack? do i really have to paste the 4 folders (maps, materials, graphs, and something else i cant remember) in to the portal/portal folder? because now i have to rename one of the maps folders "maps1" and the one i want to play "maps." theres got 2 b a simplr way!! hlp!!!!

New to mapping? Never used Hammer before? LOOK HERE!

The "simplr way" is built in to windows. When you paste in the "maps" from the Portal TFV, it merges it in to your existing maps directory, instead of overwriting it. Try it and see.

Also, I'd be posting what msleeper did if he didn't beat me to it this one time.

to msleeper: that'd be gr8, sept i lrdy joynd intrloprz and it didn't help at all. i dont know how to even start making a map, or how to open hammer. all i no about hammr is its the engine 4 p0rtal.

My point is that the people at Interlopers have more "newbie" articles, and the members there have the patience to deal with your typing.

Now that's a for saying exactly what I was thinking.
Really though, unless you're typing this on a laptop in some school restroom, no need to save 3 seconds and type gr8 instead of great.
or for that matter take the extra time to type in something like p0rtal instead of portal.

On a positive note, this is where I went to get started mapping.
