A Question for all of you!

Hey, I've devoted quite a bit of my time into making the better part of my map-pack, and I know that progress on it has slowed and paused for periods. I want to know how many people are still out there, wanting and waiting for new portal content. Personally, I'm a die-hard fan of the game, but I've noticed the fanbase dwindling down.

Basically, I want to know if there are enough people out there still wanting for custom content for me to continue pushing onward with my levels. Please voice yourselves in the thread's poll, be honest about it, and please don't flame me for asking about this.

Also, if you know of other portal fan-sites / forums please share them here.

Um...YES! I've been waiting for new content for a while. The only thing I've heard anything about lately was PESP. I'm disappointed that the community project fell through - I just want some new maps to play.

Actually I've been keeping an eye on your map pack for a while now as there is little else going for Portal at the moment apart from Chell's legend and some of Mazk1985's stuff.
Also, for those of you interested, I'm also working on a map pack. Here are some screenshots I took a fair while back:

Of course I'd like to see new maps! I would even make some myself if I had ideas of puzzles... however, I don't know how much time I will have, because I have to write my Bachelor thesis (haven't started with it yet)

Definately keep working at your map pack cos your right about content drying up lately. I think it started when prelude came out. Dunno why. Anyway I think we need as many maps as possible to try wake up the community a bit. I'm working on the 5th map in my PMK series and It's getting very very close to completion (after about 6 months of on/off development). I would post screenies but I'm being lazy  I'll post some soon tho

Back to the point anywho. Definately don't give up dvlstx theres still a few of us left who want it. I for one have been checking nearly every day for new portal maps on the hope that someone has released one.

I can't release maps as often as I would. Plus portal mapping is dropping cause everyone is mapping for L4D, maybe.

But ya. I'll release stuff. Just wait. \/

The final installment of pesp is due out soon. I give it a week? I have most of the week off now, just one test on wednesday

Of course I am still interested in map packs, but I think some good modifications for the game should be released as well...

I'll probably start from the beginning and play the whole way through to get the best experience.

That's what I'd do. I have plans on making it into a package, instead of the regular bsps.

I think that the amount of maps is dwindling due to lack of ideas (which is probably incorrect) or the more likely reason (and my reason for pausing my map) is the attention to detail that seems to be needed in every map that takes a large amount of time. I would crank out a couple of maps myself if it weren't for that damned lighting.

Of course, don't stop now. We need as many maps as we can get.

As for whether it's worthwhile to map packs versus individual maps, I think map packs win hands down every time. A well-packaged map pack is as easy to install as a single map and offers much more playtime for the work. That was the impetus for the mapping contests.

I think the ideal model for distribution here is pesp, which was released episodically and will be rolled up in to a pack when it's done.

That is a wonderful idea, and as a friend of PESP's creator I have to say that he's done a wonderful job at packaging it.

However, my map-pack wouldn't fit/make sense in episodes, because it has a story in it that all ties together in the end. If it was released in episodes, the bits of the story from the start, middle, and end would get jumbled up or forgotten. I also try to portray an image of GLaDOS in my map pack, and that too would be dissolved if the story was broken apart.

Anywho! I sincerely wish that I wasn't helping sbrown test his PESP maps because when he told me a plot twist in it I was like OH S**T! and now I wont get to do that when I play it ._.

I tend to only go so far with making my lighting perfect, especially when I have a lot of colored lighting in LDR. If I can't get it to look good I just space the light out and make the room well lit. It may not look as good but I believe the geometry and the playability of the map is more important.
