Well hi, i am new to this forum, but not to portal mapping. I make maps a while since TF2maps, but i still map for TF2. I had a problem with the Portal hammer. When i open hammer and start making my map i dunno why about 45 second or a minute or less, hammer just randomly crashes. I was thinking i could need help how to fix this. Like Hammer just works for some few time then it freezes and it doesn't after that. I could have been in the 5th level on my map cause of that. Plz help me i need to know how to fix this. If this is not the correct place to put this topic, then forgive me.

I think this sometimes happens on 64 bit systems, but I am not entirely sure. Try searching on the steam forums for hammer issues.

No reason there'd be an issue on 64-bit. 32-bit applications run exactly the same on 64-bit OS as a 32-bit one because they are still being ran on an x86 processor. And I've never had a problem like this with my 64-bit installs.

Yeah I've had a 64bit processor / OS for probably 3 or 4 years now, and I've not had a problem with this.

I really wish we could do more to help, but unfortunately Hammer doesn't create crash reports or anything so it's really hard to troubleshoot.

If it ever does crash let the dialog that pops up and shows the progress bar finish, click Debug and send me the mdump file it produces and I'll take a look.

Well this is other kind of crash this crash happens inside hammer.. not ouside.. I'll explain you. Like i start my map and continue it.. several seconds later i dunno why.. the hammer just.. freezes however doesn't work... then " Not respond" quote is shown above. I don't know whatis this... but i think it has to with portal hammer it self.

Maybe you could run some memory tests using a program called memtest?

Ah. I sometimes get this, but ussually when I am doing something to fast or doing something that cannot be done. I have no idea what would be causing it in your case, however.

I probably can't help, but could you tell us the answers to these? It might help someone be of assistance:

What do you normally have running at the same time as the crash/hang happens?

How big is your map?

What mode is the top-left (3D view) screen in? (some take up quite a lot of resources, iirc)

Can you post a recent compile - just a fast one? I know you didn't say it crashes when compiling, but it would give us an idea of what is in your map, and if that could cause any problems?

What options are ticked in the view menu?

Are you using custom models/materials/textures in your map? If so, what are they?

EDIT: > VDC, on Hammer's 3D viewport wrote:

There are six 3D view options available - 3D Wireframe, 3D Filled Polygons, 3D Textured Polygons and 3D Shaded Textured Polygons, as well as newly added 3D lighting preview and 3D raytrace preview. These options control which 3D mode is used when the 3D preview window is rendered. Note that the last two modes are very demanding of the system and may cause crashes or instability.
