Adding GLaDOS to map

Hello!

In the new contest you were able to choose "The Reveal" theme. Of course it doesn't require to have GLaDOS, but I'm sure that some of the mappers want to add it to their map. There just aren't any tutorials how to add it.

So what I am asking: Do you know how to add GLaDOS to your map or is there a .vmf file from GLaDOS battle to use as quide? I have somehow got GLaDOS prefab but I really wouldn't bother using it just yet because I am pretty sure it wouldn't work properly.

Thanks.

I'm guessing you mean the model rather than the voice? Grab a copy of vmex if you don't have it, extract the final bsp with gcfscape and take a look how the final battle is done in hammer.
Then learn from it, improve it and rebuild it from scratch, cause theft is bad even the intellectual property kind (you'll know when it happens to you).

I say improve it because Valve rarely use anywhere near the optimal entity solution for their stuff, it's usually wildly complex compared with how it should be.

If you mean the voice, well, vmex will tell you exactly how that works too, though I'm lazy and fake it with ambient generics set to 'play everywhere' (can anyone tell me any downsides to this method?)

Yep, I mean the model.

And if you want GLaDOS to speak, you should follow this http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Making_GLaDOS_speak tutorial. Downside of using ambient_generics is that when you pause the game GLaDOS still continues to speak thus if you want something to happen after GLaDOS have finished talking it doesn't work properly. So you should use logic_choreographed_scenes.

That is a good downside, I will investigate choreographed scenes now and do stuff properly.

Word of warning to anyone attempting the battle with GLaDOS. Maybe my computer is cursed (because god knows the 8gb of RAM wouldn't be the problem), but Hammer will crash for me every single time I attempt to load up the final battle scene. And in a normal map, the Model Browser will "stop responding" when I try to open the GLaDOS model from there. I hope those of you attempting the GLaDOS battle fare better than me!

Or you could continue with the "redefining" and make GLaDOS something new entirely!

I have a lulz idea for GLaDOS, and I just might do it.

That's...odd... I assume you've tried decompiling the map multiple times and it happens with every VMF?

It's been a while since I tried, and I'll go give it another shot just to see if it still happens. My assumption was that the model is insanely large and detailed and that was what was causing it.

I can load my vmex vmf of escape_02, but I decompiled it before the March Update.

And GlaDOS loads fine.

my vmex escape_02 works fine and I decompiled it after the March Update.

On the topic of GLaDOS, I've been considering myself as a voice actor again. I'm definitely gonna need to run it through a boatload of effects to make it not sound retarded, but I think my idea needs a good voice to add to it.

I successfully decompiled escape_02 only a few months ago and made this test map out of it. All entities that control the fight are deleted, so she just remains there and lets you eat the cake.

Don't eat it! It will poison you to death through a point_hurt!!!
