By the way, I used hammer world editor on Source SDK. I made the map, and I'm frustrated that I can't even play it. I don't know how to launch it! Whoever helps me will be my savior! :notworthy:

why don't you look at how the other maps do it and figure it out from there?

but anyway for portal 2 you type in map <mapname> after putting the BSP into the maps folder
as for portal 1 you put the BSP into the bonus maps folder and use the bonus maps option

Sorry, I'm kind of a noob. What does BSP mean? Oh and my map is for Portal 1.

The BSP is the compiled map.

New to mapping? Never used Source SDK before? LOOK HERE!

I just tried that, but there isn't a bonus map folder.

If this is a Portal 1 map then all you need to do is place the map inside (wherever Steam is at on your hard drive)\portal\portal\maps, then launch Portal, open the console and type "map (whatever your map name is)".

I tried that, but it didn't work. It just says no such map.

Then you put the map in the wrong spot. You don't need the .bsp extension on the end, either.

It says that it's a BSP file, but there is no .bsp in it's name, so how do I get rid of that? Also, I went to /Local Disk/Program Files/Steam/Steamapps/tripleg100/Portal/Portal/Maps. (tripleg100 is my username.) Anyway, is that the right spot? Also, when I click on the file directly, it says error, setup file 'gameinfo.txt' doesn't exist in subdirectory 'hl2'. Check your -game parameter or VCONFIG setting.

I don't know what exactly you are doing wrong, but whatever it is it's pretty spectacular. Is this a pirated copy of Portal or something?

No, it isn't pirated. And also, what does it mean to be a "compiled" map? How do I find the map, anyway? Through the console, how EXACTLY do i type it? It is called First Portal Map.

You shouldn't have spaces in your map.

I don't understand. You said you made this map yourself, right? Did you not hit the "Compile" button when you were building your map, not once ever?

Seriously you should read this. If you have never touched a map editor before and don't know what a "compiled map" is then you should probably go back to the training wheels.

I will read your link, and no I've never compiled a map. Maybe that is the problem. I will also take the spaces out and see if everything works.

If you don't compile your map then it won't run. You can't play a VMF.

I've been searching everywhere, but nothing tells me how to compile a map. I'm not completely new to mapping, but all I don't know is pretty much how to compile. Can you tell me? I have Hammer open right now.

Oh I've done that, but then It brings me to the main menu of Portal. Do I set keep all of the options on normal, or change them?

Post your compile log.
