I'd like a theme of "recycling".

the theme where you use old rooms in new ways to complete new goals. such as retrieving a cube from two rooms back for the current cube, or additional elements added to the main room if you press a specific button.

I'm not so sure that would be a great idea.

First, because it would funnel the gameplay of the map. While it sounds like a somewhat versatile idea, I wouldn't think it would be broad enough to base an entire contest around. Secondly, because Portal's design goes against this a bit. If you look through the official campaign, you'll see that 'recycling' is infrequently (if ever) used. While it isn't explicitly stated, doors usually denote the beginnings and endings of separate puzzles. A lot of players, when entering a new room, will forget about the previous chamber entirely, regardless of whether or not there is a door in between.

Anyways, on the contest theme: It should be broad enough to allow everyone to participate, but easy enough to execute. I think "custom theme" is a perfect example of this, as you can create your own environments using the stock textures, while it would let texture artists shine.

hey, you know what I loved so much?

HMW's maps.

I played them so much, I could finish them in minutes each. I believe the creator said I was "talking shit" on TWP, though what I have said is completely true.

but what I loved was the designs, and the brush movements, and the intricate puzzles, and the new, fresh puzzle ideas.

We should promote these types of maps. I want to play a map with that amazing detail once more.

I also would like to state, we should not name the awards after people, or do awards for the worst of maps.
I mean, imagine how petty, butthurt and downright idiotic we'd look if we did.

that's pretty much all the suggestions I have. promote cool, creative maps, and don't nickname "worst" awards like you're trying to make some stupid point that makes you look like a complete tool.

While detail is important, puzzle comes first: If it looks amazing but the puzzle sucks, it isn't a good map. The puzzle needs to be at least somewhat good, because that's the point of the map after all.

I'd like to be a judge, if there's a slot left

Although, if a map have an incredibly good puzzle, but is lit fullbright, it still sucks

Still haven't decided if it's going to be up to judges, or up to the map's rating over a set period of time, or what. I might custom code something on the view file page for the contest

Also, rule proposal here. How's about we forbid straight up PTI entries? It's a quick shortcut to making a puzzle but it's difficult to be creative within the rules of the editor.

I like the pro-hammer spirit. Also, I think judges might be the best, since if someone tries to make one map and enters multiple categories, we can't rate for the category itself...

It has to be judges, if it was based on site rating then other contestants could abuse that by downvoting other maps.

I promise this is the last time I'll do this, the irony is too huge.

Irony? What irony? I see no irony, please tell me at what house this irony resides.

I was simply giving a suggestion about not being petty with awards, especially nicknaming them to try and spite someone who disliked our site for trolling them. I mean, that'd be pretty petty, childish and the sign of a terrible admin, no?

I had half a mind to suggest an Msleeper award but ahem anyway...

So far I like Van's rules, with the exception of maybe not including SFM...we should either do Mapping or Moviemaking, it's hard to judge them both equally.

Mapping, it is what we do best.

But still, just having 'another mapping contest' is not gonna cut it. We should do something extreme, fun, and unique.

Like a "HOLY CRAP, MAP FOR PORTAL 1 AGAIN", "EXPLOSIONS! MAKE A MAP THAT HAS EXPLOSIONS!", "BLUE PORTALS MAPPING CONTEST", etc.

I vote we totally do that. It'd be a map that has the most tools -hammers, wrenches, scissors etc.- in one single map. The entire map could be based on a giant screwdriver.

Oh, wait, I don't. because that'd be petty and something a tool would do. I'd be the bigger, and probably sole, man who walks away in any metaphorical situation like that. And this forum would take be the, uh, it who'd metaphorically walk away too. out of self respect, no doubt

I mean, if I were some admin, and did that, I'd be a disgrace to all other admins out there, no? Incompetent, you could say. Perhaps even Tyrannic. That's a cool word

Still, let's shove this totally metaphorical situation to one side before we drown in it. Point is, we shouldn't be a tool, no matter what.

I wondered, would these maps have to be portal 2-themed?

Depends on what medium. If Hammer, I say no, as long as you incorporate the portalgun as the main mechanic, you can reference any game you want.

But if it's SFM, I do definitely want to keep it portal themed. There's no too many good portal movies out there.

I like the idea, like... have at least one explosion in your map. Also Portal 1 maps, for nostalgia sake.

My vote is still towards Hammer (SFM will not freaking install for me!).

You know I was just joking, right? But yeah, we need something unique. Another idea is to make a Portalgun-less map, and make puzzles using buttons and gates to open Portals.

I would actually support the theme being portalgun-free puzzles, I already have a puzzle being worked out that is that style.

"No Portal-gun" and "Explosion Day" seem like valid options; going to be honest: they could probably fit into the 'anything goes' setup.

I vote we have a "best oddball" entry.

Would both be combined in one category or two separate ones? Cause entering with the same map in two categories sound pretty good to put your chances up...

Also Reep, I did notice the

We could give a bonus point or two for explosions, and I think No-Portal designs could be factored into a game element.
