Yes, the legend is true. It explains Steam on Linux and Big Picture. And I'm sure this was forced upon due to Window's 8 direction.

I wonder if Valve will come out with their own, in-house "Steam box" or if they'll just approve various vendors whose hardware is "Steam approved" or whatever.

Most likely an in-house unit. If you have an android phone, you can see that multiple 3rd party hardware units running the same OS does not provide the same or full experience. Anyone with a brain and trying to sell something they would use can figure that out.

I like that Valve is taking matters into their own hands because of Windows 8. It would be cool if it could run Source/Source 2 tools on it as well.

Personally hoping for them distributing it to partners or something just for the sake of openness. I foresee it as a specialized computer anyway so you know people are going to build them homebrew once people start taking them apart unless steam wants to be a jerk and make it something you have to register with them (sounds more like Origin or Sony if they're doing that).

I seriously doubt they'd do that, especially with their own complaints of open-ness.

I mean, what features could it possibly have that steam doesn't already, besides the controllers - which they'll probably release along with open-source drivers. Just my guesses.

Isn't this effectively just going to be a PC with VALVe branding?

I imagine it as Big Picture mode on Linux, but you can't escape it to go to the desktop.

Except they said it would still be usable as a computer, e.g. you can use other web browsers, whatever

So who knows

If they say "Usable as computers." I expect it to run Source tools.

Of course, though I should think it would be a bit awkward to do that on a TV in your living room rather than on a more traditional desktop.

Also, the chances are you'll be doing it with their futuristic biometricks.

One thing I do know. If we CAN use source tools on the Steam Box, they'd better actually WORK instead of crashing 40 times every use.

Also: SFM on a console. I lol'd.
