It is easy to catch, I agree. But It seems to only be in The Black Box trailer. I tried the newer Orange Box trailers and it is not there. It may been the first of Valve's silliness that we saw with the Portal 2 trailers.

Was it just me who used chairs at the place where you need to smash the ceiling-tube with a rocket turret to get a cube? I seriously just learnt that is is real solution today.

yeah I really did not know. that was the only part of Portal I did not understand. I think it was that the pipe wasn't obvious enough, or that the thought of shooting a rocket upwards didn't click.
still, it was the /only/ time that a shot upwards was needed.

You could hit it from the side if the portal was at the right level.
