some sign textures displaying weird, like a void.

I'm having weird issues getting some signs to display. Here's two examples:
signage_paint_dispenser
signage_bridge

I'm trying to texture these on the side of a brush (32 x 32 x 4) which sits inside a sign_frame01.mdl

But the texture comes out looking like some kind of void. That is it's black at first, but as I walk around looking at it, it shifts colors to white and grey. Kind of like when youre looking at the void in gameplay.

I've tried adjusting the texture's scale and shift with no change. For giggles I tried it on all kinds of different sized brushes, and it's always the same.

Meanwhile, plenty of other sign textures show up and work just fine.

Anyone have any idea what this is about, or how to get these textures to display properly?

Thanks much in advance!

Don't use overlay/decal/vertex textures on a brush face.

Above.

Use the decal tool or the overlay tool to place it in the world.

Sorry I'm being such a noob with this. Still struggling... when I use the overlay tool, the overlays just arent even showing up at all, in Hammer or gameplay.

When I use the decal tool, the decal shows very large, and resizing it seems to do nothing. As soon as I let go of the resize handles it snaps back to large.

The brushes I'm trying to place these on are nodraw-textured. Again, please forgive my newness.I consulted the Valve dev wiki but it really didn't help much with this.
