Mice - Where?!

I think I win the award for "most stupid yet completely valid post subject"

I am, in many ways, a perfectionist. Usually down to the pixel.

Which brings me to this. Why is there not one, single "mouse" model in the entirety of Portal 2???
Mouse being, computer mouse Ofc.

It's just baffling me! Surely, I am wrong? It's slowing my second "serious" map down!

Most of the computers you see are pretty old--none of the monitors have colors past green or amber. They're probably running some sort of DOS or UNIX.

Actually, yeah - that's a good question. GLaDOS wasn't switched on 'til the mid-90s by most counts, and in Portal 2 we go through some modern areas (i.e. the sorts of areas where mice were found in Portal 1)

Maybe they're all made of biodegradable plant fiber and melted after about 20 years.

Found the additional evidence I was looking for...look at the web archive version of aperturescience.com. The secret message you can find talks about how they're all using 20-year-old technology.

It also said Cave Johnson died of mercury poisoning after making mercury-laced shower curtains for high up officials. I think most of the stuff there was retconned (hence why it's no longer up)

I really want to just pakrat in the old mouse, just to have a mouse. but that's not exactly good, is it.

this is frustrating me so much. it's such a tiny detail, but it's holding up my development of this map.

If it's from Portal 1, someone on TwP contacted the dev team a while back and they gave the thumbs-up to packagaing any Portal 1 or Source SDK Base resources into Portal 2 maps.

Words cannot describe the happiness I feel at that messages.

getting right on it now! so happy.

Does this include Zombie Ragdolls? textures? I'm sorta doing an Evolution piece, based on one of my old, old maps.

Also, how do you repeat the old window effect? the really distorted effect of OBS rooms.

It's a P1 refracting material, I don't remember the name. Check the sample map.

Yes. Source SDK stuff definitely is, if you can get them to work.

Just a word of warning: ANI files are horribly broken in Portal 2. If you try to import a model that uses them it will crash. So you can't use standard humans at all.

ah, good! thanks!

Also I don't know about animation, so, I'll just use the props. I need a specific monitor pose model, the refracting glass, the plug decal, the posters, the stair texture, a shelf, the ragdolls of the zombies and a mouse.

actually that is a lot. but I'm thankful I'm allowed to pakrat it! thanks for helping me out here!

About the ANI files:

VALVe used to use them to share animations across models. Now they don't anymore, and as such Portal 2 didn't need to support them (they were mostly used for human models). So it doesn't support them.

The drawback is this: if there are several zombie models which share an ani file (I don't know if this is the case), then all of those zombie models are broken and you can't import them, not even as ragdolls, without decompiling and recompiling.
